The Mitsubishi 6G75 is a 3.8-liter V6 gasoline engine
representing the final and largest displacement evolution of the 6G7 “Cyclone”
engine family. Produced from the early 2000s through the 2010s, the 6G75 was
engineered to deliver high torque output for heavy sport utility vehicles and
performance-oriented passenger cars. It succeeded the 6G72 and 6G74 variants,
incorporating a larger bore and stroke, reinforced block architecture, and
forged internal components to accommodate the increased displacement and power
output.
The 6G75 is a 60-degree V6 with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) valvetrain and
24 valves - four valves per cylinder - operated by roller rocker arms with
hydraulic lash adjusters. The engine was produced in two primary configurations:
a multi-point fuel injection (MPI) variant for most markets, and a direct
injection (GDI) variant for Japanese Domestic Market applications.
The MPI variant features a compression ratio of either 9.0:1 or 9.5:1, while the
GDI variant utilizes a higher 10.0:1 compression ratio to achieve increased
power and torque. The engine utilizes a belt-driven timing system and is of
interference design, requiring strict adherence to timing belt replacement
schedules. The 6G75 was installed in Mitsubishi’s flagship SUVs, including the
Pajero (Montero) and Shogun, as well as performance-oriented models such as the
Eclipse GT and Galant Ralliart.
The 6G75 is a water-cooled, four-stroke, naturally aspirated V6 gasoline engine
configured for longitudinal mounting in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive
SUVs, as well as transverse mounting in performance passenger cars. The engine
family encompasses MPI and GDI variants with differing compression ratios and
output characteristics.

Maximum Power: 194 kW (260 hp) at 6,000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 385 Nm (284 lb-ft) at 3,750 rpm.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron, a
material selected for its exceptional rigidity, vibration-damping properties,
and ability to withstand the elevated cylinder pressures associated with the
3.8-liter displacement. The block incorporates additional ribbing and
reinforcement compared to earlier 6G7 series blocks, a modification introduced
to handle the increased structural loads generated by the larger bore and longer
stroke. The 60-degree V-angle provides inherent primary and secondary balance,
reducing the need for balance shafts while maintaining a compact overall width.
The closed-deck design provides robust support for the cylinder head gaskets and
minimizes bore distortion under high thermal and mechanical loads. Cast-in-place
cylinder bores are machined directly into the iron casting. The block
incorporates four main bearing webs with two-bolt main bearing caps per cylinder
bank, with the crankshaft supported by four main bearings. The crankshaft is
forged steel, selected for its strength under the high torque output of the
engine. A stamped steel oil pan is sealed to the lower crankcase, providing the
oil reservoir.
Block Material: Cast iron.
Bore Diameter (finished): 95.0 mm (3.74 in).
Main Bearing Caps: Cast iron, two-bolt design.
Cylinder Bore Deformation Limit: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).
The cylinder heads are manufactured from aluminum
alloy, with separate heads for each cylinder bank. The SOHC valvetrain actuates
24 valves - four valves per cylinder - through a system of roller rocker arms.
The roller rocker arms reduce frictional losses compared to sliding-follower
designs and incorporate hydraulic lash adjusters (HLAs) that automatically
maintain zero valve clearance throughout the engine’s service life, eliminating
the need for periodic manual valve adjustments.
The camshafts are driven by a reinforced rubber timing belt from the crankshaft,
with an automatic spring-loaded tensioner maintaining belt tension. The timing
belt also drives the water pump. The combustion chambers are of a pent-roof
design with centrally located spark plugs to promote efficient flame
propagation. The GDI variant features cylinder head modifications to accommodate
the direct injectors, which are mounted in the cylinder head adjacent to the
spark plugs. The engine is of interference design; in the event of timing belt
failure, valve-to-piston contact occurs, resulting in significant internal
damage.
Head Material: Aluminum alloy.
Valve Diameter (Intake): 34.0 mm (1.34 in).
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 30.0 mm (1.18 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 6.0 mm (0.24 in).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees.
The 6G75 was produced with two distinct fuel system
configurations. The MPI variant employs a multi-point electronic fuel injection
system. Six fuel injectors are mounted in the intake manifold, positioned to
spray fuel directly onto the back of each intake valve. The port injection
design provides excellent air-fuel mixture preparation and throttle response. A
fuel pump assembly located within the fuel tank supplies pressurized fuel to a
fuel rail that distributes fuel evenly to all six injectors.
The GDI variant employs a direct injection system where fuel is injected
directly into the combustion chamber at high pressure. A high-pressure fuel
pump, driven by a cam lobe on the rear cylinder head, draws fuel from the tank
and delivers it to a fuel rail at pressures up to 12.0 MPa (1,740 psi). The rail
distributes pressurized fuel to six injectors mounted in the cylinder head. The
GDI system enables stratified charge combustion under light-load conditions,
improving fuel efficiency, while operating in homogeneous mode under high-load
conditions for maximum power output. The GDI variant requires high-octane fuel
to realize its full power output and prevent knock.
Injection Type (MPI): Multi-point electronic fuel injection.
Injection Type (GDI): Direct injection.
Fuel Pressure (MPI): 255-294 kPa (37.0-42.6 psi) with vacuum line disconnected.
Fuel Pressure (GDI): 12.0 MPa (1,740 psi) maximum.
Fuel Injector Resistance (MPI): 12.0-16.0 Ohms.
Fuel Requirement (MPI): 87 octane (Research Octane Number 91) minimum.
Fuel Requirement (GDI): 91 octane (Research Octane Number 95) minimum (premium).
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
The oil pump draws lubricant from the stamped steel oil pan through a mesh
strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before
entering the main oil gallery. From the gallery, pressurized oil is distributed
to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
roller rocker arms, hydraulic lash adjusters, and timing belt tensioner.
A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil pump maintains system pressure
within operational limits to prevent over-pressurization during cold starts. The
forged steel connecting rods and crankshaft are supported by a lubrication
system designed to handle the high torque output and sustained load conditions
characteristic of SUV applications.
Oil Type: SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 (synthetic recommended; API SL, SM, or higher).
Oil Capacity (with filter): 4.3-4.9 liters (4.5-5.2 US qt) (variant dependent).
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 294-392 kPa (42.6-56.9 psi).
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven.
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on, full-flow.
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design employing a cross-flow aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan or
engine-driven fan with viscous clutch, depending on vehicle application. A
centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the timing belt, circulates coolant
through the engine block, cylinder heads, heater core, and transmission oil
cooler on automatic transmission applications.
A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal operating
temperature, with a bypass circuit that allows the engine to warm rapidly by
circulating coolant only within the engine until the thermostat opens. The
cooling system is sized to manage the thermal load of the 3.8-liter V6 under
sustained high-load conditions, such as towing or off-road operation.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors.
Coolant Capacity: 8.5-9.5 liters (9.0-10.0 US qt) (variant dependent).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82-86 °C (180-187 °F).
Thermostat Full-Open Temperature: 95 °C (203 °F).
Radiator Cap Pressure: 88-108 kPa (12.8-15.7 psi).
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing belt-driven.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Cast aluminum intake manifold with
variable-length intake runners. The system uses a set of butterfly valves within
the intake plenum to switch between long runners for low-end torque and short
runners for high-end power. The changeover occurs at approximately 3,500 rpm,
with the ECU controlling the vacuum-actuated valves. A throttle body with an
electronically controlled butterfly valve manages airflow into the engine.
Exhaust System: Stainless steel exhaust manifolds with individual runners per
cylinder bank. The MPI variant utilizes two heated oxygen sensors (one per bank)
upstream of the catalytic converters for fuel trim feedback. The GDI variant
incorporates additional sensors for precise combustion control.
Distributorless ignition system with individual
pencil-type ignition coils mounted directly over each spark plug, or a
waste-spark system with three coils serving six cylinders. The system
incorporates a crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensors for
precise ignition timing control. The GDI variant uses a higher-energy ignition
system to accommodate stratified charge combustion.
