The Hyundai D4FD is a 1.7-liter inline-4 turbocharged
diesel engine belonging to the U2-series. Introduced around 2010, it was
designed to bridge the gap between the 1.6L U2 (D4FB) and the 2.0L R-series
(D4HA). Developed primarily for European-market applications, this powerplant
focused on delivering a combination of fuel efficiency, low-end torque, and
reduced emissions.
Its architecture incorporates a variable geometry turbocharger and a
high-pressure common rail injection system to meet stringent Euro 5 and Euro 6
emissions standards while maintaining drivability across a broad rpm range.
The D4FD engine established a reputation for robust torque delivery from low
engine speeds, making it well-suited for heavy vehicles such as SUVs and sedans.
The use of a cast-iron cylinder block paired with an aluminum cylinder head
provides durability under the high compression ratios inherent to diesel
combustion. The variable geometry turbocharger effectively minimizes turbo lag,
while the common rail injection system ensures precise fuel metering.
This engine is notable for its maintenance characteristics, including a timing
chain that eliminates replacement intervals and hydraulic lifters that remove
the need for valve clearance adjustments. Its longevity is closely tied to
adherence to low-ash oil specifications, particularly in vehicles equipped with
a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

engine.

Maximum Torque (High Power): 325-340 Nm (240-251 lb-ft) @ 1,750-2,500 rpm.
Fuel System: Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) utilizing Bosch solenoid
injectors operating at pressures up to 1,800 bar (26,107 psi).
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron,
providing the necessary rigidity and thermal stability to withstand the high
mechanical loads generated by a compression ratio of 17.0:1 and peak combustion
pressures. This closed-deck design incorporates thick cylinder walls and
reinforced bulkheads around the main bearing caps.
The block features a deep-skirt configuration that extends below the crankshaft
centerline, enhancing structural stiffness and reducing noise, vibration, and
harshness (NVH). Integrated within the block are the coolant passages
surrounding each cylinder bore and the oil galleries supplying the crankshaft
bearings and piston cooling jets.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
to reduce overall engine weight and improve thermal conductivity. It houses a
DOHC arrangement with four valves per cylinder. The intake valves have a
diameter of 27.0 mm (1.06 in), while the exhaust valves are 24.5 mm (0.96 in) in
diameter. The combustion chambers are of a re-entrant type, promoting efficient
air-fuel mixing and swirl generation.
The D4FD utilizes hydraulic lash adjusters (hydraulic tappets) integrated with
the valve actuation system. These components automatically maintain zero valve
clearance throughout the engine’s operational life, eliminating the need for
periodic valve adjustment. The valve stem seals are manufactured from
fluororubber material to resist the higher operating temperatures associated
with diesel combustion.
The fuel system employs a third-generation common rail
direct injection architecture. A high-pressure fuel pump, driven by the
camshaft, delivers diesel fuel to the common rail accumulator at pressures
reaching 1,800 bar (26,107 psi). The rail distributes fuel to four solenoid-type
injectors that are electronically controlled by the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
Each injector is capable of delivering multiple injection events per combustion
cycle, including pilot, main, and post-injections. This strategy reduces
combustion noise, lowers particulate matter emissions, and enables regeneration
of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) through late post-injection cycles. The
system incorporates a water-in-fuel sensor and a fuel temperature sensor to
protect the high-pressure components.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, wet-sump type
with a gear-type oil pump mounted to the crankshaft. The pump is driven directly
by the crankshaft sprocket, ensuring immediate oil flow upon startup. Oil is
drawn from a steel oil pan through a baffled strainer before being pressurized
and routed through a full-flow spin-on oil filter.
The system supplies lubricant to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod
bearings, camshaft journals, hydraulic lash adjusters, and the variable geometry
turbocharger bearing. Piston cooling is provided by oil jets located in the
cylinder block, which direct continuous streams of oil to the underside of each
piston crown to manage thermal loads under high load conditions.
The cooling system is a pressurized, water-cooled setup
utilizing a centrifugal water pump driven by the engine’s serpentine accessory
belt. A wax-type thermostat with a rated opening temperature of 88°C (190°F)
regulates the operating temperature to optimize combustion efficiency and
emissions control. Coolant circulates through the cast-iron cylinder block and
aluminum cylinder head before passing through a cross-flow radiator equipped
with an electric cooling fan.
An additional coolant circuit serves the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler,
reducing intake air temperatures to lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The
system also supplies coolant to the oil cooler, which is integrated into the oil
filter housing.
Timing System: The camshafts are driven by a
silent-type timing chain. The system consists of a single chain connecting the
crankshaft sprocket, intake camshaft sprocket, and exhaust camshaft sprocket. A
hydraulic chain tensioner, supplied with oil pressure from the lubrication
system, maintains consistent chain tension. No scheduled replacement interval is
specified, though inspection is advised if chain noise becomes audible.
Exhaust System: The exhaust system integrates a close-coupled diesel oxidation
catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). In Euro 6 applications, a
selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system with AdBlue injection is added to
reduce NOx emissions. The variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) uses moveable
vanes in the turbine housing to optimize boost pressure across the engine speed
range.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR): A high-pressure EGR system routes a portion of
exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold through a cooled
EGR circuit. An EGR cooler reduces the temperature of recirculated gases, and a
DC motor-operated EGR valve precisely controls flow rates based on ECU demand.
Overall Engine Length: 580 mm (22.83 in).
Overall Engine Width: 650 mm (25.59 in).
Overall Engine Height: 690 mm (27.17 in).
Dry Weight: The complete engine assembly weighs 145 kg (320 lb), with the
cast-iron cylinder block contributing significantly to the mass compared to
all-aluminum gasoline counterparts.
Engine Oil Capacity (Total): 5.3 liters (5.6 qt).
Engine Oil Capacity (Service Refill): 4.8 to 5.0 liters (5.1 to 5.3 qt),
depending on the oil pan variant and whether the oil filter is replaced. Engine
Oil Specification: ACEA C3 grade oil is mandatory for vehicles equipped with a
DPF. SAE 5W-30 or 0W-30 viscosity is recommended.
Glow Plug Type: Bosch or NGK ceramic or steel-type glow plugs, depending on the
production year. Glow plug operation is controlled by the ECU with post-glow
function to reduce cold-start emissions. Coolant Capacity: The cooling system
holds 6.5 liters (6.9 qt).
Timing Chain Inspection Interval: Inspection is recommended at 90,000 km (56,000
mi) for chain stretch and tensioner condition, though no mandatory replacement
interval is specified. Fuel Filter Replacement Interval: 30,000 km (18,600 mi)
or as indicated by the service reminder system.
