The Hyundai D4EB, designated within the D-series engine
family and commonly referred to as the 2.2 CRDi, is a 2.2-liter inline-4
turbocharged diesel powerplant. Produced from 2005 to 2010, the engine was
developed under license from VM Motori, serving as a larger-displacement
counterpart to the 2.0-liter D4EA. The D4EB is distinguished by its robust
cast-iron construction, Bosch common rail direct injection system, and variable
geometry turbocharging.
It gained recognition for its application in the second-generation Hyundai Santa
Fe, where it delivered substantial low-end torque suitable for mid-size SUVs.
The engine combined European diesel technology with Hyundai’s manufacturing
practices to achieve a balance of fuel efficiency, durability, and emissions
compliance during its production cycle.

Valvetrain Configuration: Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) operating 16 valves (4
valves per cylinder). The valvetrain employs roller finger followers and
hydraulic lash adjusters, eliminating the need for routine manual valve
clearance adjustments.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron with a
closed-deck design to maximize rigidity under high combustion pressures inherent
to turbocharged diesel operation. The block features a deep-skirt structure
extending below the crankshaft centerline, providing enhanced support for the
main bearing caps. Bore diameter measures 87.0 mm (3.43 in). The cylinder bores
are machined with a plateau honed finish to optimize oil retention and piston
ring sealing.
The crankshaft is forged steel with induction-hardened journal surfaces,
supported by five main bearings. The block incorporates integrated oil galleries
for piston cooling jets (oil squirters) that direct lubricant to the underside
of each piston to manage thermal loads during sustained high-output operation.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
and designed for cross-flow efficiency, with intake ports positioned on one side
and exhaust ports on the opposite side. The combustion chamber is formed
primarily within the piston bowl, with the cylinder head featuring a flat mating
surface.
Valves: 16 total; 8 intake, 8 exhaust.
Valve Diameter: Intake valves are 31.5 mm (1.24 in); exhaust valves are 28.0 mm
(1.10 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 6.0 mm (0.24 in) for both intake and exhaust.
Valve Guides: Press-fit sintered iron guides.
Valve Seat Inserts: Powder metal inserts with multi-angle seat geometry for
improved flow and heat dissipation.
Hydraulic Lash Adjusters: Integrated into the cylinder head casting, operating
directly on roller finger followers to maintain zero valve clearance throughout
engine life. Glow Plugs: Ceramic or steel sheathed glow plugs installed in the
pre-chamber area of each cylinder, controlled by an engine management system
that modulates post-heating duration based on coolant temperature and engine
operating conditions.
The D4EB employs a third-generation Bosch Common Rail
Direct Injection (CRDi) system operating at pressures up to 1,600 bar (23,206
psi). High-Pressure Pump: CP3 type (radial piston pump) driven by the timing
belt from the crankshaft. The pump incorporates a fuel metering valve to
regulate rail pressure according to engine load and speed.
Fuel Rail: Common rail accumulator mounted centrally on the cylinder head,
featuring a rail pressure sensor and a pressure limiting valve. Injectors:
Solenoid-actuated or piezoelectric (depending on production date) injectors with
7-hole nozzles designed for multiple injection events per combustion cycle.
Injection strategies include pilot injection, main injection, and post-injection
for exhaust aftertreatment regeneration.
Fuel Filtration: High-efficiency fuel filter with integrated water separator
equipped with a water-in-fuel sensor. Fuel Pressure: Idle rail pressure
approximately 300 bar (4,350 psi); maximum rail pressure reaches 1,600 bar
(23,206 psi) under full load.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, full-flow
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
Oil Pump Type: Internal gear (gerotor) pump with a pressure relief valve
calibrated to 5.5-6.5 bar (80-94 psi). Capacity varies with the presence of an
oil cooler and the specific oil pan configuration.
Oil Capacity: 5.9-6.5 liters (6.2-6.9 qt) including oil filter replacement.
Recommended Oil Viscosity: 5W-30 or 5W-40. Oil Quality Requirement: ACEA C3 for
vehicles equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF); ACEA B4 for non-DPF
variants. API classification CH-4 or higher.
Oil Pressure: At warm idle, pressure ranges from 1.2-1.8 bar (17-26 psi); at
3,500 rpm, pressure reaches 4.0-5.0 bar (58-73 psi). Oil Cooler: Liquid-to-oil
plate-type heat exchanger mounted on the oil filter housing, integrated with the
engine cooling circuit. Piston Cooling Jets: Six oil squirters (one per
cylinder) integrated into the main bearing girdle, directing a continuous stream
of oil to the underside of each piston crown.
The cooling system is pressurized and utilizes a
centrifugal water pump driven by the timing belt. Water Pump Type: Cast iron
housing with a pressed impeller; driven by the rear side of the timing belt.
Thermostat: Wax-pellet type, located in the coolant outlet housing. Opening
temperature is 82-88 °C (180-190 °F). Full opening occurs at 95 °C (203 °F).
Coolant Capacity: 8.5-9.2 liters (9.0-9.7 qt) inclusive of engine block,
radiator, heater core, and auxiliary oil cooler circuit.
Radiator: High-efficiency cross-flow aluminum core with plastic end tanks.
Cooling fan configuration consists of dual electric fans controlled by the
Engine Control Unit (ECU) based on coolant temperature and air conditioning
load. System Pressure: Radiator cap rated at 1.1 bar (16 psi). Coolant
Specification: Ethylene glycol-based with phosphate and silicate-free
formulation suitable for aluminum components.
Aspiration System: Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT)
manufactured by BorgWarner or Mitsubishi. The turbine housing incorporates
adjustable vanes controlled by a vacuum-actuated solenoid to vary exhaust gas
velocity across the turbine wheel, optimizing boost response across the engine
speed range. Maximum boost pressure ranges from 1.4-1.6 bar (20-23 psi)
absolute.
Intercooler: Air-to-air intercooler mounted in the front-end cooling package to
reduce intake air temperature after compression, increasing charge density and
reducing thermal stress.
Timing System: Single timing belt constructed from high-tensile rubber with
fiber reinforcement. The belt drives the camshaft, high-pressure fuel pump, and
water pump. An automatic hydraulic tensioner maintains correct belt tension
throughout the service interval. The crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket, and
fuel pump sprocket feature alignment marks for synchronization.
Exhaust Aftertreatment: Variants equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
incorporate a catalyzed substrate and periodic post-injection fuel events for
regeneration. Non-DPF variants utilize a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) to
reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions.
