The Opel A16LET, designated LLU within the GM family,
is a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four petrol engine belonging to the GM Family
1 (Ecotec) series. Produced between 2007 and 2014, the A16LET was engineered as
a performance-oriented powerplant, combining a robust cast iron cylinder block
with aluminum alloy cylinder head, dual overhead camshafts, and a turbocharger
with intercooler.
The engine features continuously variable camshaft phasing on the intake side
and multi-point fuel injection, achieving a specific output exceeding 110 hp per
liter. The A16LET powered high-performance variants of Opel’s Corsa, Astra,
Insignia, and Meriva models, delivering strong mid-range torque supported by an
overboost function that temporarily increased output under full-load conditions.
Engine Type: Inline 4-cylinder, 4-cycle, water-cooled, turbocharged gasoline.

variable camshaft phasing system. Camshafts are driven by a toothed timing belt.
The cylinder block is manufactured from cast iron with
an open-deck design. Bore diameter measures 79.0 mm (3.11 in). The cast iron
construction provides the rigidity required to withstand elevated cylinder
pressures generated by forced induction. The crankshaft is forged steel with
eight counterweights, supported by five main bearings.
The block incorporates an integrated oil gallery system feeding the main
bearings, connecting rods, and turbocharger lubrication circuit. The cylinder
bores are machined with a plateau honed finish and utilize cast iron liners
integrally cast into the block.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
with pent-roof combustion chambers and cross-flow port architecture.
Valves: 16 total; 8 intake, 8 exhaust.
Intake Valve Diameter: 33.0 mm (1.30 in).
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 28.5 mm (1.12 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.0 mm (0.20 in) for both intake and exhaust.
Valve Seat Inserts: Powder metal sintered alloy with multi-angle seat geometry.
Valve Guides: Press-fit sintered iron guides.
Hydraulic Lash Adjusters: Direct-acting units mounted in the cylinder head
casting, operating on bucket-type cam followers. These adjusters automatically
maintain zero valve clearance throughout engine life.
Camshafts: Chilled cast iron camshafts with induction-hardened lobes. The intake
camshaft incorporates a variable camshaft phasing actuator with an adjustment
range of 60 degrees (30 degrees advance, 30 degrees retard). The system is
controlled by the engine control unit via an oil control valve.
Continuous Variable Camshaft Phasing: The system adjusts intake cam timing
continuously across the engine speed and load range, optimizing volumetric
efficiency, reducing pumping losses, and improving turbocharger response. Valve
Springs: Progressive-rate springs designed for the elevated engine speeds and
forced induction environment.
The fuel system employs multi-point fuel injection with
sequential injection timing. Injection Type: Sequential multi-port injection
with fuel injectors positioned in the intake manifold runners adjacent to each
intake port.
Engine Management System: Bosch or Siemens ECU with integrated boost control,
utilizing inputs from a mass airflow sensor (hot-film type), throttle position
sensor, coolant temperature sensor, intake air temperature sensor, crankshaft
position sensor, camshaft position sensor, oxygen sensors (pre-catalyst and
post-catalyst), and manifold absolute pressure sensor.
Fuel Pressure: Regulated to 3.5-4.0 bar (51-58 psi) via a vacuum-referenced fuel
pressure regulator integrated into the fuel rail. Injector Flow Rate: 350-380
cc/min at standard operating pressure. Fuel Pump: In-tank electric fuel pump
with flow rate calibrated for forced induction operation.
Intake Manifold: Composite plastic manifold with integrated charge air cooler
(air-to-air intercooler) positioned upstream of the throttle body. The manifold
incorporates a resonance chamber and an electronically controlled throttle body.
The lubrication system is a full-flow, pressurized
design utilizing a rotor-type oil pump driven by the crankshaft. Oil Pump Type:
Internal gear (gerotor) pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft, housed
within the front timing cover assembly. Oil Capacity: 4.5 liters (4.8 qt)
including oil filter replacement.
Recommended Oil Viscosity: 5W-30 fully synthetic. Oil Quality Requirement: GM
dexos2 specification. ACEA C3 for models with gasoline particulate filter where
equipped. Oil Pressure: At warm idle, pressure ranges from 1.2-1.8 bar (17-26
psi). At 3,000 rpm, pressure reaches 3.5-4.5 bar (51-65 psi).
Oil Cooler: Liquid-to-oil plate-type heat exchanger integrated into the oil
filter housing, utilizing engine coolant for thermal stabilization of oil
temperature under turbocharged operation. Oil Filter: Cartridge-type filter
housed within a modular housing accessible from the engine top or under-vehicle
location. Crankcase Ventilation: Closed PCV system with an integrated oil
separator incorporated into the valve cover. Blow-by gases are routed to the
turbocharger compressor inlet.
The cooling system is pressurized and utilizes a
centrifugal water pump driven by the timing belt. Water Pump Type: Centrifugal
pump with a die-cast aluminum housing and stamped steel impeller. Thermostat:
Wax-pellet type with integrated housing. Opening temperature is 82-88 °C
(180-190 °F). Coolant Capacity: 6.5-7.0 liters (6.9-7.4 qt) inclusive of engine
block, heater core, radiator, and turbocharger cooling circuit.
Radiator: High-efficiency aluminum cross-flow core with plastic end tanks.
Cooling fan configuration consists of dual electric fans with variable speed
control based on coolant temperature, charge air temperature, and air
conditioning load. System Pressure: Radiator cap rated at 1.1-1.2 bar (16-17
psi).
Turbocharger Cooling: The turbocharger bearing housing is integrated into the
engine cooling circuit. An auxiliary electric water pump continues coolant
circulation after engine shutdown to prevent heat soak and coking of the
turbocharger bearings. Coolant Specification: Phosphate and silicate-free
ethylene glycol-based coolant meeting GM specifications for aluminum engine
construction.
Ignition System: Direct ignition system with individual
pencil-type ignition coils mounted directly over each spark plug (coil-on-plug).
The system utilizes a crankshaft position sensor and a camshaft position sensor
for sequential ignition timing. Spark Plug Type: NGK PFR6T-G or equivalent.
Spark Plug Gap: 0.7-0.8 mm (0.028-0.031 in).
Timing System: Toothed timing belt constructed from high-tensile rubber with
fiber reinforcement. The belt drives the intake and exhaust camshafts and the
water pump. An automatic spring-loaded tensioner maintains belt tension.
Replacement interval is 150,000 km (93,000 miles) or 10 years; a reduced
interval of 100,000 km (62,000 miles) is recommended in severe service
conditions.
Turbocharger System: Single turbocharger with fixed geometry or variable nozzle
turbine depending on production date. The turbocharger features a water-cooled
bearing housing and an electronically controlled wastegate. Boost pressure is
regulated by the engine control unit based on load, engine speed, and knock
sensor input. Maximum boost pressure is approximately 0.8-1.0 bar (12-15 psi).
Intercooler: Air-to-air charge air cooler mounted in the front bumper area,
reducing intake air temperature after compression to increase charge density.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with integrated turbocharger mounting
flange. A close-coupled catalytic converter is mounted immediately downstream of
the turbocharger for rapid light-off during cold starts.
