The Mazda J5-DE is a 2.5-liter, 60-degree V6 gasoline
engine belonging to the J-family, a series of powerplants designed specifically
for Mazda’s rear-wheel-drive (RWD) luxury sedans and multi-purpose vehicles
during the 1990s. The J-family was developed as a larger-displacement
alternative to the more widely known K-series V6, distinguished by its cast iron
cylinder block construction and a focus on durability, smoothness, and low-end
torque characteristics suited to the luxury and executive vehicle segments. The
J5-DE represents the smaller-displacement variant within this family, positioned
below the 3.0-liter JE-ZE.
The engine employs a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) valvetrain with twenty-four
valves, an aluminum alloy cylinder head, and a multi-point electronic fuel
injection system. Its design incorporates a variable-length intake manifold
system that optimizes torque delivery across the engine speed range, enhancing
drivability in the heavy rear-wheel-drive chassis it was designed to power.
The J5-DE was configured exclusively for longitudinal mounting, serving as the
powerplant for models such as the Mazda 929 (Sentia) and the Efini MS-9, as well
as certain variants of the Mazda MPV. While heavier than the all-aluminum
K-series engines due to its cast iron block, the J5-DE earned a reputation for
exceptional durability and smooth power delivery.
The J5-DE is a naturally aspirated, water-cooled, four-stroke V6 engine
configured for longitudinal mounting in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive
vehicle architectures. Its 60-degree bank angle provides inherent primary and
secondary balance, eliminating the need for balance shafts.
Engine Type: 60° V6, 4-cycle, water-cooled, naturally aspirated.
Displacement: 2,494 cc (152.2 cu.in).
Bore and Stroke: 82.7 mm (3.26 in) x 77.4 mm (3.05 in).
Compression Ratio: 9.0:1 or 9.5:1 depending on market and production year.
Valvetrain: DOHC, 24-valve (4 valves per cylinder) with belt drive.
Fuel System: Multi-point electronic fuel injection.
Firing Order: 1-2-3-4-5-6.
Maximum Power: 118 kW (160 Hp) at 6,000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 211 Nm (156 lb-ft) at 3,500 rpm.
Idle Speed: 650 ± 50 rpm.
Redline: 6,500 rpm.
Fuel Cutoff: 6,800 rpm.
The cylinder block is manufactured from high-strength
gray cast iron, a material selected for its superior rigidity, wear resistance,
and vibration-damping properties. This construction stands in contrast to the
all-aluminum K-series V6 and was chosen to provide the durability and longevity
expected in Mazda’s luxury and executive vehicle segments.
The block features a 60-degree V-angle with a deep-skirt design, where the
cylinder walls extend below the crankshaft centerline to provide robust support
for the main bearing caps and to minimize vibration transmission to the chassis.
Closed-deck construction is employed, with the water jacket fully enclosed at
the top deck surface, ensuring maximum cylinder head gasket clamping force and
resistance to bore distortion under load. Pressed-in, replaceable cast iron
cylinder liners are used, allowing for engine rebuilding through liner
replacement.
The block incorporates five main bearing webs with four-bolt main bearing caps
on the center journals for increased bottom-end rigidity. A cast aluminum oil
pan is sealed to the lower crankcase, contributing to overall engine mass
reduction.
Block Material: Cast iron.
Liner Type: Replaceable, pressed-in cast iron liners.
Bore Diameter (standard): 82.7 mm (3.26 in).
Main Bearing Caps: Cast iron, four-bolt design on center caps.
The cylinder heads are constructed from aluminum alloy,
with separate castings for each cylinder bank. The heads utilize a cross-flow
design with the intake manifold positioned within the V of the engine and the
exhaust manifolds on the outer sides, a configuration that optimizes packaging
and thermal management. The pent-roof combustion chamber design incorporates
four valves per cylinder - two intake and two exhaust - arranged in a compact
configuration that promotes efficient flame propagation and allows for a
centrally located spark plug.
The DOHC valvetrain operates twenty-four valves through a system of bucket-type
tappets. Hydraulic lash adjusters (HLA) are integrated into the tappets,
automatically maintaining zero valve clearance throughout the engine’s
operational life, eliminating the need for periodic manual valve adjustments.
The camshafts are driven by a reinforced rubber timing belt from the crankshaft,
with an automatic spring-loaded tensioner maintaining belt tension. The engine
is of non-interference design; piston crowns and valves occupy separate spaces
within the combustion chamber, ensuring that timing belt failure does not result
in valve-to-piston contact.
Head Material: Aluminum alloy.
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder with hydraulic lash adjusters.
Valve Diameter (Intake): 32.0 mm (1.26 in).
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 28.0 mm (1.10 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.5 mm (0.22 in).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees.
The J5-DE employs a multi-point electronic fuel
injection (EGI) system with sequential injection. Six fuel injectors - three per
cylinder bank - are mounted in the intake manifold, positioned to spray fuel
directly onto the back of the intake valves. This port injection design provides
excellent air-fuel mixture preparation and maintains intake valve cleanliness.
The intake manifold incorporates a variable-length intake system designed to
optimize torque delivery across the engine speed range. This system uses a set
of butterfly valves within the intake plenum to switch between long intake
runners at low engine speeds - enhancing low-end torque - and short intake
runners at high engine speeds - improving high-rpm power output.
The transition between runner configurations is controlled by the engine control
unit (ECU) based on engine speed and throttle position. A fuel pressure
regulator maintains constant fuel pressure relative to intake manifold vacuum,
ensuring consistent injector operation.
Injection Type: Multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection.
Intake System: Variable-length intake manifold.
Variable Intake Activation Point: 4,200 rpm.
Fuel Pressure: 294-314 kPa (42.6-45.5 psi) with vacuum line disconnected.
Fuel Injector Resistance: 12.0-16.0 Ohms.
Fuel Requirement: 87 octane or higher (Research Octane Number 91 or higher).
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
The oil pump draws lubricant from a cast aluminum oil pan through a mesh
strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before
entering the main oil gallery. From the gallery, pressurized oil is distributed
to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
hydraulic lash adjusters, and variable intake manifold actuators.
A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil pump maintains system pressure
within operational limits to prevent over-pressurization during cold starts or
high engine speeds. A water-cooled oil cooler is integrated into the oil filter
mounting base to stabilize oil temperature during sustained operation.
Oil Type: SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 (API SG, SH, or higher).
Oil Capacity (with filter): 4.0-4.5 liters (4.2-4.8 US qt).
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 294-392 kPa (42.6-56.9 psi).
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven.
Oil Cooler: Water-cooled, integrated with oil filter mount.
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design engineered to manage the thermal load of a V6 engine operating in a
rear-wheel-drive configuration. A cross-flow aluminum radiator with an electric
cooling fan provides cooling capacity for sustained operation. A
centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the timing belt, circulates coolant
through both cylinder banks, the cylinder heads, and the heater core.
A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal operating
temperature, with a bypass circuit that allows the engine to warm rapidly. The
system is designed to provide uniform cooling across both cylinder banks,
maintaining consistent thermal expansion across the cast iron block and aluminum
head interface.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors.
Coolant Capacity: 8.0-9.0 liters (8.5-9.5 US qt).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82-86 °C (180-187 °F).
Thermostat Full-Open Temperature: 95 °C (203 °F).
Radiator Cap Pressure: 88-108 kPa (12.8-15.7 psi).
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing belt-driven.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
