The Ford B7DA is a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder turbocharged
gasoline engine belonging to the second generation of the Ford EcoBoost family.
Produced from 2018 to 2025, this powerplant was engineered as a high-efficiency
successor to earlier 1.0 EcoBoost units, incorporating significant mechanical
revisions to enhance reliability and performance.
The engine was primarily installed in the Ford Focus Mk4 and Ford C-MAX II, with
a mild-hybrid variant designated as B7DC. A key evolution for this generation is
the transition from a wet timing belt to a more durable timing chain for the
valvetrain, addressing a noted concern of its predecessors.
The Ford B7DA represents a mature iteration of Ford’s small-displacement
turbocharged strategy. It combines a cast iron cylinder block with an aluminum
cylinder head to balance thermal stability with weight efficiency.
The engine is distinguished by its adoption of a timing chain drive system, a
split-cooling setup for faster warm-up, and Ti-VCT (Twin Independent Variable
Camshaft Timing) for optimized valve control across the rev range. Delivering
125 hp (92 kW), it provides a favorable balance of urban drivability and fuel
economy, though it retains common direct-injection drawbacks such as the
potential for carbon buildup on intake valves.
Engine Type: Inline 3-cylinder, turbocharged, 4-stroke gasoline.
Displacement: 999 cc (61.0 cu.in).
Valvetrain: DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft), 4 valves per cylinder (12 total).
Bore x Stroke: 71.9 mm x 82.0 mm (2.83 in x 3.23 in).
Compression Ratio: 10.5:1.
Fuel System: High-pressure direct injection.
Aspiration: Single turbocharger with intercooler (Continental GTDI12V).
Maximum Power: 125 hp (92 kW) at 6000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) at 1400-4500 rpm.
Engine Management: Bosch (presumed).
Engine Weight (dry): 99 kg (218 lb).
The cylinder block is manufactured from gray cast iron,
a material choice that ensures high rigidity and excellent acoustic properties
under high thermal and mechanical loads from turbocharging. It features an
open-deck design to aid in cooling efficiency.
The engine utilizes a forged steel crankshaft supported by four main bearings.
Connecting rods and pistons are lightweight aluminum alloy to reduce
reciprocating mass. The engine’s unique split-cooling system allows the cylinder
head to be cooled independently from the block, accelerating warm-up and
reducing friction.
The cylinder head is constructed from cast aluminum
alloy and features a DOHC arrangement with 12 valves. It is equipped with Ti-VCT
(Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing) on both the intake and exhaust
camshafts, allowing for a broad torque curve and reduced emissions.
Hydraulic lash adjusters (hydraulic compensators) are integrated, eliminating
the need for manual valve clearance adjustments. The valves are actuated by
roller finger followers to minimize friction. Due to the direct injection
system, fuel does not wash over the intake valves, making the engine susceptible
to carbon deposit accumulation over time.
The B7DA employs a direct fuel injection system
operating at high pressures, typically between 200-300 bar. This system
precisely injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber, enabling higher
compression ratios and improved fuel atomization for efficient combustion.
The recommended fuel is premium unleaded, with
a minimum octane rating of 95 RON (Research Octane Number), though 98
RON is recommended for optimal performance.
The lubrication system is a wet-sump design with a
pressurized circuit. The oil pump is driven by a separate belt located within
the oil sump - a maintenance component requiring periodic replacement despite
the main timing chain.
The total oil capacity is 4.6 liters (4.9 qt)
with the filter. The specified oil grade is SAE 5W-20, conforming to
Ford specification WSS-M2C948-B, chosen for its low viscosity to reduce
friction and improve fuel economy in cold starts.
The cooling system utilizes a split-cooling design with
a rotary valve that directs coolant flow independently to the cylinder head and
block. This technology allows the cylinder head to remain cooler under load
while enabling the block to heat up quickly to reduce internal friction.
Total coolant capacity is approximately 5.8
liters (6.1 qt). The system includes a water-cooled intercooler
integrated into the intake manifold to reduce charge air temperatures
and improve volumetric efficiency.
Ignition System: Individual coil-on-plug ignition.
Exhaust System: Integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head, coupled with a
close-coupled gasoline particulate filter (GPF) for Euro 6d compliance.
Starting System: Enhanced starter motor; some variants feature a 48V mild-hybrid
(mHEV) system with a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) for
start-stop functionality and electric boost.
Cylinder Deactivation: The engine features the ability to deactivate one
cylinder, running on two cylinders under low-load conditions to reduce fuel
consumption. Emissions Control: Meets Euro 6d emission standards.
Engine Oil Capacity with Filter: 4.5-4.6 liters (4.8-4.9 qt).
Engine Oil without Filter: 4.4 liters (4.6 qt).
Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 5W-20 (Ford WSS-M2C948-B).
Coolant Capacity: 5.5-5.8 liters (5.8-6.1 qt).
Recommended Coolant: Ford spec WSS-M97B44-D (orange).
Oil Change Interval: 12 months or 15,000-20,000 km (9,300-12,400 miles).
Timing Chain: No specified replacement interval; inspect for noise.
Oil Pump Belt Replacement: Recommended every 150,000 km (93,000 miles)
or 10 years.
Spark Plug Replacement: 60,000 km (37,000 miles).
Cylinder Head Bolts: 40 Nm + 90° + 90°.
Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) + 90°.
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) + 90°.
Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolts: 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
