The Saab B234L is a 2.3-liter, turbocharged inline-four
engine from the second-generation H-engine family, designated B2x4. Introduced
in the mid-1990s as the "Full Pressure Turbo" (FPT) variant for the Saab 9000
range, this powerplant represents a high point in Saab's internal combustion
engine development, combining a robust cast-iron block with a sophisticated
aluminum cylinder head and the advanced Trionic 5.5 engine management system.
The B234L features a square bore and stroke configuration - 90.0 mm by 90.0 mm -
a design choice that yields exceptional mid-range torque delivery. This
long-stroke architecture provides immediate throttle response and effortless
pulling power from low engine speeds, characteristics that distinguish it from
both the higher-revving 2.0-liter B204L and the more aggressively tuned
2.3-liter B234R Aero variant.
The engine employs a water-cooled Garrett T25 turbocharger, dual chain-driven
balance shafts to quell second-order vibrations inherent in a long-stroke
four-cylinder, and the renowned Trionic "Red Cassette" ignition system, which
uses ionization current sensing for precise knock control. While the B234L was
factory-installed exclusively in the Saab 9000 series, its reputation for
durability, robust internal components, and tuning potential has made it a
sought-after powerplant for engine swaps into the Saab 900 NG and 9-3 chassis.
The B234L is a transverse-mounted, inline-four engine utilizing a wet-sump
lubrication system and a water-cooled turbocharger. Its square bore and stroke
configuration, unusual for a turbocharged engine of its era, prioritizes torque
production across a broad rev range. The Trionic 5.5 engine management system
controls ignition timing, fuel injection, and boost pressure, utilizing a unique
ionization sensing method within the integrated direct ignition (DI) cassette to
detect knock on a cylinder-by-cylinder basis.

0The cylinder block is constructed from gray cast iron
using a closed-deck design, providing exceptional rigidity to withstand the
elevated cylinder pressures generated by the turbocharged induction system. The
block features thick wall sections around the cylinder bores and substantial
webbing in the main bearing area, contributing to the engine's reputation for
withstanding significant power increases beyond factory specifications. Within
the block, a forged steel crankshaft with eight counterweights is supported by
five main bearings, utilizing 54.0 mm / 2.13 in main journal diameters for
enhanced load capacity.
The connecting rods are forged powder metal with a fracture-split design,
featuring 52.0 mm / 2.05 in big-end bores. The pistons are high-strength
aluminum alloy castings with a low-friction skirt coating and incorporate
cooling galleries fed by oil jets directed from the block. The engine
incorporates two counter-rotating balance shafts driven by a separate chain from
the crankshaft. These shafts are positioned on either side of the block and are
designed to cancel the second-order vertical vibrations produced by the
long-stroke reciprocating assembly.
The cylinder head is a cross-flow aluminum alloy
casting featuring dual overhead camshafts operating sixteen valves. The
combustion chambers are of the pent-roof design with a narrow valve angle of
approximately 33 degrees, optimizing flame propagation and tumble generation for
efficient combustion. The camshafts are driven by a separate timing chain from
the crankshaft and act directly on hydraulic bucket tappets, which automatically
maintain zero valve clearance and eliminate the need for periodic adjustments.
The intake valves are larger than the exhaust valves to maximize volumetric
efficiency under forced induction. The exhaust ports are designed to maintain
exhaust gas velocity to the turbocharger turbine housing.
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 16 valves.
Intake Valve Diameter: 33.5 mm / 1.32 in.
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 30.0 mm / 1.18 in.
Valve Lift: 9.1 mm / 0.358 in (intake and exhaust).
Camshaft Drive: Single-row roller chain with hydraulic tensioner.
Balance Shaft Drive: Separate chain with mechanical tensioner, driven from
crankshaft nose.
The B234L employs a sequential multi-point fuel
injection system controlled by the Trionic 5.5 engine control unit. Fuel is
delivered by an in-tank electric pump operating at a regulated pressure of 3.0
bar / 43.5 psi to a fuel rail mounted on the intake manifold. The fuel injectors
are of the high-impedance, four-hole type, providing fine atomization for
complete combustion.
The system utilizes a returnless fuel delivery configuration on later variants,
where the pressure regulator is integrated into the fuel pump assembly, reducing
fuel heating in the engine bay. Fuel delivery is calculated based on inputs from
the mass air flow (MAF) sensor, throttle position sensor, coolant temperature
sensor, and the knock detection system within the DI cassette.
Lubrication is provided by a high-volume gear-type oil
pump mounted within the timing cover and driven directly by the crankshaft. The
pump delivers oil through a full-flow spin-on filter and an oil cooler
integrated into the filter housing. The oil cooler is of the water-to-oil type,
using engine coolant to stabilize oil temperature under sustained high-load
operation.
The lubrication circuit supplies pressurized oil to the crankshaft and
connecting rod bearings, the camshaft journals, the hydraulic tappets, the
timing chain tensioner, the balance shaft bearings, and the turbocharger center
housing. The oil pan is a stamped steel unit with internal baffling to maintain
oil pickup under acceleration and cornering.
The cooling system is a forced circulation, pressurized
design sized to manage the thermal load of the turbocharged engine. A
belt-driven water pump with a stamped steel impeller circulates coolant through
the cylinder block, cylinder head, turbocharger bearing housing, and the oil
cooler. The system utilizes a cross-flow aluminum radiator with plastic end
tanks and an electric cooling fan controlled by the Trionic ECU. A wax-type
thermostat, rated at 90°C / 194°F, regulates coolant flow.
The expansion tank is pressurized and incorporates a pressure relief cap rated
at 1.4 bar / 20 psi. The coolant circuit includes a separate feed to the
turbocharger, which continues to circulate coolant by thermosiphon after engine
shutdown when the water pump is no longer turning, a design feature intended to
prevent localized overheating and coking of the turbocharger bearings.
The intake system incorporates a large-volume air
cleaner housing with a paper element and a mass air flow (MAF) sensor
immediately downstream. The intake manifold is a dual-plenum design, tuned to
optimize torque characteristics across the engine speed range. Charge air from
the turbocharger passes through an air-to-air intercooler mounted at the front
of the vehicle before entering the throttle body.
The ignition system is the Saab Trionic Direct Ignition
(DI) cassette, commonly referred to as the "Red Cassette" due to its red
housing. This cassette contains five individual ignition coils - one per
cylinder and a fifth for monitoring - and integrates the spark plugs into a
single assembly.
The cassette performs ionization current
sensing across the spark plug gap after each combustion event, detecting
knock, misfire, and combustion quality on a per-cylinder basis. This
feedback allows the Trionic ECU to adjust ignition timing and boost
pressure dynamically, enabling the engine to operate safely on varying
fuel octane ratings without a traditional knock sensor.
The Garrett T25 turbocharger features a water-cooled
bearing housing and an integral wastegate controlled by a pneumatic actuator.
Boost pressure is regulated by the Trionic ECU via a solenoid valve that
modulates the pressure signal to the wastegate actuator. The turbine housing is
sized to provide rapid spool-up, with peak torque achieved at 1,800 rpm.
Timing System: The camshafts are driven by a single-row
roller chain with a hydraulic tensioner. The timing chain is designed for the
life of the engine under normal operating conditions. The balance shafts are
driven by a separate, shorter chain from a sprocket on the crankshaft nose,
using a mechanical tensioner.
Emissions Control: The engine employs a three-way catalytic converter with
closed-loop lambda feedback. A heated oxygen sensor upstream of the catalyst
provides air-fuel ratio data to the Trionic ECU, enabling precise mixture
control for optimal catalyst efficiency. A secondary oxygen sensor downstream
monitors catalyst function. Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) and Evaporative
Emission Control (EVAP) systems are incorporated, with the PCV system featuring
a heated breather line to prevent condensation and ice formation in cold
climates.
