The Opel B10XFL is a 1.0-liter, turbocharged
inline-three gasoline engine belonging to the GM Small Gasoline Engine (SGE)
family, a global engine architecture developed for high efficiency and compact
packaging. Introduced in 2014, this engine represented Opel’s entry into the
downsized, three-cylinder turbocharged segment, marketed under the ECOTEC Direct
Injection Turbo designation. The B10XFL was engineered to deliver the torque and
power of a larger naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine while achieving
substantial reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, meeting Euro 6
emissions standards.
The B10XFL is characterized by its all-aluminum construction - cylinder block
and cylinder head - which reduces overall mass while maintaining structural
integrity. The engine employs a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) valvetrain with
twelve valves, dual independent variable valve timing, and a direct injection
fuel system operating at high pressure.
A single-scroll turbocharger with an integrated exhaust manifold provides forced
induction, while a timing chain system eliminates belt replacement. The engine’s
compact dimensions and lightweight design made it suitable for Opel’s small and
compact car segments, where it served as a high-efficiency alternative to larger
displacement engines.
The B10XFL is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged inline-three gasoline
engine configured for transverse mounting in front-wheel-drive vehicle
architectures. The three-cylinder configuration provides inherent compactness
while requiring balance measures for refinement.

0The cylinder block is manufactured from aluminum alloy
using a high-pressure die-casting process, a material selection that
significantly reduces overall engine mass. The block features an open-deck
design, where the cylinder bores are supported at the top only by the water
jacket perimeter, enhancing cooling efficiency around the upper cylinder area
while minimizing casting complexity. Cast-in-place, iron-coated aluminum
cylinder bores are machined directly into the block casting, with a
high-phosphorus content applied to the bore surface to provide a durable,
low-friction running surface.
The block incorporates a deep-skirt design extending below the crankshaft
centerline, with a structural aluminum ladder frame - a bedplate - bolted to the
lower crankcase to support the crankshaft main bearings and enhance bottom-end
rigidity. The inline-three configuration requires a balance shaft to counteract
the inherent first-order rocking couple. A single balance shaft, driven by a
gear from the crankshaft, is housed within the cylinder block to improve
refinement. The block is configured for transverse mounting with integrated
engine mount brackets.
Block Material: Aluminum alloy
Bore Diameter: 74.0 mm (2.91 in)
Main Bearing Configuration: Four main bearings with integrated bedplate
Balance Shaft: Single shaft, gear-driven from crankshaft
The cylinder head is constructed from aluminum alloy
and utilizes a DOHC valvetrain with four valves per cylinder - two intake and
two exhaust - actuated by roller finger followers. The camshafts are driven by a
silent-type roller chain from the crankshaft, with an automatic hydraulic
tensioner maintaining optimal chain tension. Hydraulic lash adjusters are
integrated into the valvetrain, automatically maintaining zero valve clearance
throughout the engine’s operational life, eliminating the need for periodic
manual valve adjustments.
A defining feature of the B10XFL is the dual independent variable valve timing
system, designated DC-VCP (Dual Continuous Variable Cam Phasing).
Oil-pressure-actuated phasers are mounted on both the intake and exhaust
camshafts, allowing continuous adjustment of valve timing. This system optimizes
valve overlap for low-end torque, high-rpm power, idle stability, and fuel
economy. The combustion chambers are of a pent-roof design with centrally
located direct injectors and spark plugs, optimizing flame propagation and
mixture formation.
Head Material: Aluminum alloy
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder with roller finger
Valve Diameter (Intake): 28.0 mm (1.10 in)
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 25.0 mm (0.98 in)
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.0 mm (0.20 in)
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees
Variable Valve Timing Range (Intake): 0-50 degrees (crankshaft angle)
Variable Valve Timing Range (Exhaust): 0-40 degrees (crankshaft angle)
The B10XFL employs a direct injection fuel system,
designated SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection). A high-pressure fuel pump,
driven by a cam lobe on the intake camshaft, draws fuel from the tank and
delivers it to a common rail mounted on the cylinder head. The system operates
at pressures up to 20.0 MPa (2,900 psi), enabling precise fuel metering and
improved charge cooling. Three solenoid-actuated fuel injectors are mounted
directly in the cylinder head, each positioned to inject fuel directly into the
combustion chamber.
The direct injection system allows for stratified charge operation under certain
conditions, improving fuel efficiency, and enables multiple injection events per
combustion cycle - pilot injection followed by main injection - to reduce
combustion noise and improve cold-start performance. The engine control unit
(ECU) calculates injection parameters based on input from the mass airflow
sensor, throttle position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, crankshaft
position sensor, camshaft position sensors, fuel rail pressure sensor, and
oxygen sensor feedback.
Injection Type: Direct injection (SIDI).
Maximum Injection Pressure: 20.0 MPa (2,900 psi).
High-Pressure Pump: Single-piston, cam-driven.
Injector Type: Solenoid-actuated, 6-hole nozzle.
Fuel Requirement: 91 octane or higher (Research Octane Number 95 recommended).
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a variable-displacement gear-type oil pump. The pump adjusts
its displacement based on engine speed, oil temperature, and pressure demands to
reduce parasitic power loss while maintaining adequate oil flow to critical
components. The oil pump draws lubricant from a cast aluminum oil pan through a
mesh strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter
before entering the main oil gallery.
From the gallery, pressurized oil is distributed to the crankshaft main
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, roller finger followers,
hydraulic lash adjusters, variable valve timing phasers, timing chain tensioner,
balance shaft bearings, and turbocharger bearing housing. A pressure relief
valve maintains system pressure within operational limits. A water-cooled oil
cooler is integrated into the oil filter housing to stabilize oil temperature
under sustained high-load operation. The lubrication system is specifically
formulated to meet the requirements of turbocharged direct injection engines,
including protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI).
Oil Type: SAE 5W-30 or 0W-20 fully synthetic (GM dexos1 Gen 2 or Gen 3
specification).
Oil Capacity (with filter): 4.0 liters (4.2 US qt).
Oil Pressure (at idle): 150-250 kPa (21.8-36.3 psi).
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 350-450 kPa (50.8-65.3 psi).
Oil Pump Type: Variable-displacement gear pump.
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design engineered to manage the thermal load of a turbocharged direct injection
engine with an integrated exhaust manifold. A high-efficiency cross-flow
aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan provides cooling capacity. A
centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the timing chain, circulates coolant
through the cylinder block, cylinder head, turbocharger bearing housing, and oil
cooler.
A wax-pellet electronically controlled thermostat regulates coolant flow,
allowing the engine control unit to actively manage engine temperature for
improved efficiency and reduced emissions. The thermostat includes a heating
element that allows the ECU to open it earlier under certain conditions. A
separate charge air cooling system uses a water-to-air intercooler integrated
into the intake manifold, with its own coolant circuit circulating through a
low-temperature radiator mounted at the front of the vehicle. The cooling system
incorporates a coolant recovery tank to maintain system pressure.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors.
Coolant Capacity: 6.0-6.5 liters (6.3-6.9 US qt) for engine circuit.
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 90-95 °C (194-203 °F).
Radiator Cap Pressure: 108-127 kPa (15.7-18.4 psi).
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing chain-driven.
Charge Air Cooler Type: Water-to-air, integrated intake manifold.
Ignition System: Distributorless ignition system with
three individual pencil-type ignition coils, each mounted directly over a spark
plug (coil-on-plug). The ECU controls ignition timing based on crankshaft
position, camshaft position, knock sensor feedback, and engine load. A knock
sensor mounted on the cylinder block allows the ECU to retard ignition timing
under detonation conditions, a critical feature for direct injection
turbocharged engines.
Turbocharger System: Single-scroll turbocharger with an integrated exhaust
manifold casting that combines the manifold and turbine housing into a single
component. This design reduces weight, improves thermal efficiency, and allows
faster catalyst light-off. The turbocharger is both water-cooled and oil-cooled,
with coolant circulating through the bearing housing after engine shutdown via
thermosiphon effect to prevent coking. An electronically controlled wastegate
actuator provides precise boost control. Maximum boost pressure is approximately
1.2 bar (17.4 psi).
Intake System: Air is drawn through a dry-type paper element air filter and a
hot-wire mass airflow sensor before entering the turbocharger compressor.
Compressed air passes through a water-to-air charge air cooler integrated into
the intake manifold before entering the cylinders. The electronically controlled
throttle body - drive-by-wire - eliminates the mechanical cable connection.
Exhaust System: Integrated exhaust manifold turbocharger casting. A heated
oxygen sensor is mounted upstream of the catalytic converter for fuel trim
feedback, with a second sensor downstream monitoring catalyst efficiency.
Timing Drive: A silent-type roller chain serves as the primary timing drive,
connecting the crankshaft sprocket to the intake camshaft sprocket. A secondary
chain connects the intake and exhaust camshafts. An automatic hydraulic
tensioner maintains optimal chain tension throughout the engine’s operational
life.
