The Hyundai G4EB is a 1.5-liter, inline-4 gasoline
engine belonging to the Alpha series. Produced primarily between 1999 and 2012,
it is characterized by a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) design with 12 valves,
utilizing three valves per cylinder. This engine was engineered for fuel
efficiency, reliable low-end torque, and straightforward maintenance, becoming a
cornerstone of Hyundai’s powertrain offerings during its production run. It is
most widely known for powering the second-generation Hyundai Accent (LC) and
offered a balance of performance and economy suitable for global markets.
The Hyundai G4EB represents a pragmatic evolution in the Alpha engine family.
Its architecture prioritizes durability and serviceability. The use of a cast
iron cylinder block ensures robust longevity, while the aluminum cylinder head
reduces overall mass. A defining feature is its valvetrain: a SOHC configuration
operating 12 valves. This setup, combined with hydraulic lash adjusters,
eliminates the need for manual valve clearance adjustments, simplifying
long-term ownership.
The engine’s power delivery is characterized by a flat torque curve, with peak
torque available from as low as 2,900 rpm, making it well-suited for urban
driving conditions. While its output is modest by modern standards, the G4EB is
renowned for its reliability and resistance to wear when properly maintained.
However, its interference design places critical importance on strict adherence
to timing belt replacement intervals.
Engine Type: Inline 4-cylinder, 4-cycle, water-cooled, naturally aspirated.
Displacement: 1495 cc (91.2 cu.in).
Bore x Stroke: 75.5 mm x 83.5 mm (2.97 in x 3.29 in).
Compression Ratio: 10.0:1.

Maximum Power (European/General Market): 88-90 hp (65-66 kW) @ 5,500-5,600 rpm.
Maximum Power (North American Market): 93 hp (68 kW) @ 5,500 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 130-132 Nm (96-97 lb-ft) @ 2,900-3,000 rpm.
Idle Speed: 750 ± 100 rpm.
Valvetrain: SOHC, 12 valves (2 intake, 1 exhaust per cylinder).
Hydraulic lash adjusters (HLA) are integrated into the rocker arms.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron,
providing a rigid foundation that minimizes vibration and contributes to the
engine’s overall durability. The block is of a closed-deck design, enhancing
structural integrity around the cylinder bores. It houses the crankshaft, which
is supported by five main bearings.
The cylinders are machined with a 75.5 mm (2.97 in) diameter bore. The water
jacket surrounds the cylinders to provide efficient heat dissipation. The block
incorporates a structural oil pan rail that improves rigidity and reduces noise,
vibration, and harshness (NVH).
The cylinder head is manufactured from an aluminum
alloy, which aids in weight reduction and efficient heat transfer. It features a
SOHC design, where a single camshaft actuates the valves via rocker arms. The
valve arrangement consists of two intake valves and one larger exhaust valve per
cylinder, a configuration designed to optimize swirl in the combustion chamber
for improved fuel mixing.
The valves are arranged in a cross-flow pattern. The valve stems utilize oil
seals to control lubrication. The camshaft is driven by a timing belt and is
supported by journals machined directly into the cylinder head. Hydraulic lash
adjusters are mounted in the rocker arms, automatically maintaining zero valve
clearance throughout the engine’s operational life.
The engine is equipped with a Multi-Point Injection
(MPI) system. This system utilizes a fuel injector for each cylinder, mounted in
the intake manifold runner, directing fuel toward the intake valves. Fuel
delivery is managed by an engine control unit (ECU) that calculates injection
duration based on inputs from sensors including the mass airflow sensor, oxygen
sensor, throttle position sensor, and coolant temperature sensor. The system
operates at a fuel pressure of 2.5-3.0 bar (36-44 psi). The intake manifold is
constructed from a composite material to reduce weight and thermal conductivity.
The lubrication system is a pressurized, wet-sump type.
A gear-type oil pump, driven directly by the crankshaft, circulates engine oil
through a full-flow, disposable filter. The system is designed to provide
immediate lubrication upon startup.
Oil pressure is regulated by a relief valve to prevent over-pressurization at
high engine speeds. The hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms receive oil
through passages within the cylinder head and camshaft supports. The total oil
capacity, including the filter, is 3.3 liters (3.5 qt).
The cooling system is a water-cooled, pressurized
system designed to maintain optimal operating temperature. A belt-driven water
pump circulates coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and the
heater core. System pressure is regulated by a radiator cap set to a pressure of
0.9-1.1 bar (13-16 psi), which raises the boiling point of the coolant.
A thermostatically controlled valve regulates coolant flow; the thermostat
begins to open at approximately 82-88°C (180-190°F). The system utilizes a
cross-flow radiator with an electric cooling fan controlled by the ECU based on
coolant temperature and air conditioning operation.
Ignition System: The G4EB utilizes a distributor-less
ignition system with a coil-on-plug (COP) configuration. Each cylinder has an
individual ignition coil mounted directly over the spark plug, eliminating
high-tension spark plug wires and ensuring precise ignition timing control.
Timing System: The camshaft is driven by a rubber timing belt with reinforced
teeth. The belt also drives the water pump. This is an interference engine
design; failure of the timing belt at operational speed results in
piston-to-valve contact, causing extensive engine damage.
Emission Control: The engine is equipped with a closed-loop emission control
system, including a three-way catalytic converter, exhaust gas recirculation
(EGR) valve, and a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system. Multiple oxygen
sensors monitor exhaust gases to maintain the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio for
efficient catalytic converter operation.
Electrical System: The charging system consists of a 12-volt, 90-amp alternator.
The starter motor is a 1.2 kW (1.6 hp) direct-drive unit.
Dry Weight: 110 kg (243 lb).
Overall Length (from accessory drive to flywheel): 620 mm (24.4 in).
Overall Width: 560 mm (22.0 in).
