The Ford D3FA is a 2.0-liter (1998 cc) 4-cylinder
Duratorq TDDi diesel engine from the "Puma" family. It was primarily used in the
Ford Transit Mk6 (2000-2006) and the Transit Tourneo as an entry-level
powertrain for front-wheel drive (FWD) commercial models. This engine represents
the base naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesel option in the lineup, noted
for its simplicity and robust construction.
The D3FA is the least powerful member of the Ford Duratorq ZSD-420 engine
family. Its design emphasizes durability and ease of repair over high
performance, making it suitable for fleet operations and light-duty commercial
use. The engine features a cast-iron cylinder block for longevity, an aluminum
cylinder head, and a direct injection system. While its power output is modest,
its relatively high torque at low revolutions makes it adequate for urban
driving and cargo hauling. Known issues relate primarily to the Bosch VP30
injection pump's sensitivity to fuel quality and timing chain wear at higher
mileages.
Engine Family: Duratorq ZSD-420 ("Puma").
Configuration: Inline 4-cylinder (R4/I4), turbocharged and intercooled.
Valvetrain: Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC), 4 valves per cylinder (16 valves
total).
Displacement: 1998 cc (121.9 cu.in).
Bore x Stroke: 86.0 mm x 86.0 mm (3.39 in x 3.39 in).
Compression Ratio: 19.0:1.
Fuel System: Direct injection (DI) utilizing a rotary injection pump (Bosch
VP30).
Timing Drive: Double-row timing chain.
Maximum Power: 75 hp (55 kW) at 3,300-4,000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 185 Nm (136 lb-ft) at 2,250 rpm.
Emission Standard: Euro 3.
Dry Weight: 210 kg (463 lbs).
Material: Cast iron.
Configuration: Inline 4-cylinder.
Cylinder Bore Diameter: 86.0 mm (3.39 in).
Piston Stroke: 86.0 mm (3.39 in).
Engine Block Features: Designed for high structural rigidity to withstand diesel
combustion pressures. The engine number is located at the junction between the
block and the front timing cover.
Material: Aluminum alloy.
Valve Train: DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft).
Valves: 16 total (4 per cylinder).
Camshaft Drive: Driven by the timing chain.
Common Issue: Camshaft bearing journals may be prone to accelerated wear in some
cases.
Hydraulic Lifters: Equipped with hydraulic lash adjusters (hydrocompensators),
eliminating the need for manual valve clearance adjustments.
System Type: Direct mechanical injection via a
distributor-type injection pump (TDDi - Turbo Diesel Direct Injection).
Injection Pump: Bosch VP30.
Injectors: Mechanical unit injectors actuated by the injection pump.
Fuel Type: Diesel fuel.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 6.4 liters (6.8 US
quarts).
Oil Specification: 5W-30 meeting Ford WSS-M2C913-A or WSS-M2C913-B standards.
System Type: Wet sump with pressure-fed lubrication.
Maintenance: Regular oil changes are critical to protect the turbocharger and
timing chain components.
Coolant Capacity: 8.0-9.0 liters (8.5-9.5 US quarts)
depending on the vehicle application (radiator size).
System Type: Water-cooled, thermostatically controlled, with a water pump driven
by accessory belt.
Intercooler: The engine utilizes a turbocharger with an intercooler to reduce
intake air temperature.
Provides forced induction. The base version of this
engine did not always feature an intercooler, but the D3FA variant generally
includes one. Emissions Control: Equipped with a diesel oxidation catalytic
converter.
Service Intervals: Oil and filter changes recommended
every 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 miles) depending on operating conditions.
Fuel Filter: Regular replacement is critical to protect the sensitive VP30
injection pump. Approximate Engine Lifespan: 320,000 km (200,000 miles).
Timing Chain: While designed for the life of the engine, the timing chain
mechanism may require inspection or replacement between 100,000 and 150,000 km
(62,000-93,000 miles) due to potential stretching.
Cylinder Head Bolts: Stage 1: 40 Nm (30 lb-ft), Stage
2: 90° Stage 3: 90°.
Connecting Rod Caps: 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) + 90°.
Main Bearing Caps: 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) + 90°.
Flywheel Bolts: 75 Nm (55 lb-ft) + 90°.
Ford Transit Mk6 (V184): Produced from 2000 to 2006,
including all body variants such as vans, minibuses (Tourneo), and chassis cabs.
Note on Shared Engine Codes: The code D3FA is also used for a significantly
smaller 1.1-liter CRDi 3-cylinder diesel found in Hyundai (i10, i20) and Kia
(Rio, Picanto) models. If working on a small hatchback rather than a Transit
van, confirm the vehicle application to ensure correct data for that 1.1L unit.
