The Chrysler ED3 engine is a 2.4-liter, naturally
aspirated, inline-4 gasoline powerplant, distinguished by its dual overhead
camshaft (DOHC) architecture. Developed as a cornerstone of the Global Engine
Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) joint venture, it is a high-displacement variant
within the World Gasoline Engine (WGE) family, co-developed with Mitsubishi and
Hyundai. Introduced in the mid-2000s, the ED3 was engineered to prioritize a
balance of refinement, durability, and broad torque delivery for use in a wide
array of front-wheel-drive Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles.
Its design emphasizes an all-aluminum construction for reduced mass, a rigid
deep-skirt block, and a maintenance-free timing chain system. The engine is
notable for its implementation of Dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on both
intake and exhaust camshafts, which optimizes volumetric efficiency across the
rev range, contributing to a flat torque curve well-suited for the weight of
compact SUVs and mid-size sedans.
Engine Type: Naturally aspirated, inline 4-cylinder, 4-stroke gasoline.
Displacement: 2,360 cc (144.0 cu.in).
Bore: 88.0 mm (3.46 in).
Stroke: 97.0 mm (3.82 in).
Compression Ratio: 10.5:1.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Power Output: 170-175 hp (125-129 kW) at 6,000 rpm.
Torque Output: 166-174 lb-ft (220-225 Nm) at 4,000-4,500 rpm.
Maximum Engine Speed: 6,500 rpm (fuel cut-off).
Valvetrain: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder, 16 valves total. Equipped with Dual
Variable Valve Timing (VVT) allowing independent adjustment of intake and
exhaust camshaft phasing. Engine Management System: Bosch or Continental
electronic engine control unit (ECU) with sequential multi-port fuel injection.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast aluminum
alloy with a deep-skirt design for increased structural rigidity and reduced
noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). Cast-in-place gray iron cylinder liners
are utilized to provide a robust wear surface for the piston rings.
The block features a closed-deck design at the cylinder head mating surface,
enhancing head gasket sealing integrity. Main bearing caps are made of powdered
metal and are cross-bolted to the block structure for increased strength under
load. The bedplate design integrates the lower crankcase, which contributes to
overall engine stiffness. Cylinder bore spacing is 98.0 mm (3.86 in).
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast aluminum
alloy. It features a cross-flow design with pent-roof combustion chambers
optimized for high swirl and tumble flow. The DOHC arrangement uses a timing
chain driving both camshafts. Camshafts are hollow for reduced mass and are
supported by four bearing caps. The VVT phasers are integrated into the sprocket
end of each camshaft.
Valve Diameter (Intake): 34.0 mm (1.34 in).
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 29.0 mm (1.14 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.5 mm (0.22 in).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees (both intake and exhaust).
Valve Lift (Intake): 8.6 mm (0.34 in).
Valve Lift (Exhaust): 8.6 mm (0.34 in).
Valve Springs: Single spring with a damper, utilizing beehive-shaped spring
design for reduced mass and improved dynamic stability at high engine speeds.
Hydraulic Lash Adjusters: Direct-acting, integrated into the camshaft follower
buckets to maintain zero valve clearance and eliminate routine valve
adjustments.
The engine utilizes a sequential multiport fuel
injection (SFI) system. Fuel is delivered through a stainless-steel fuel rail
mounted to the intake manifold. The injectors are positioned to direct fuel
toward the intake valve ports. The fuel system operates at a nominal pressure of
400 kPa (58 psi) regulated by a returnless system to reduce evaporative
emissions.
Dual VVT allows the engine control unit to adjust valve overlap to optimize
combustion stability, fuel economy, and cold-start performance. The engine is
calibrated for 87 octane (R+M/2) as a minimum requirement; however, certain
high-output calibrations in performance-oriented trims recommend 91-93 octane
for maximum power output.
The lubrication system is a full-flow, pressurized
system using a variable displacement vane-type oil pump. This pump adjusts
output based on engine speed, load, and temperature to reduce parasitic loss and
improve fuel efficiency. The system capacity is 4.3 liters (4.5 quarts)
including the filter.
A spin-on, full-flow oil filter is mounted to the oil filter housing on the
engine block. The recommended lubricant is SAE 5W-20 synthetic blend or full
synthetic oil meeting Chrysler MS-6395 material standard. An oil cooler,
integrated into the oil filter adapter, utilizes engine coolant to maintain
stable oil temperature under sustained high-load operation.
The cooling system is a pressurized, cross-flow design
with a high-efficiency water pump driven by the timing chain via a sprocket
mounted to the back of the pump. The system capacity varies by vehicle platform
but is approximately 7.0 liters (7.4 quarts) for most applications. A wax-type
thermostat with a nominal opening temperature of 90°C (194°F) regulates coolant
flow.
The system is designed to operate with a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol-based
antifreeze and deionized water. The aluminum cylinder head and block are managed
with a reverse-flow cooling strategy that directs coolant to the cylinder head
first to reduce detonation tendencies and manage thermal stress on the head
gasket.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: A composite plastic intake manifold with
a variable-length intake runner system is employed. Long runners are utilized at
low engine speeds to enhance torque, while a short-runner plenum opens above
approximately 3,500 rpm to maximize peak power output.
Exhaust System: A stainless-steel exhaust manifold integrates a close-coupled
three-way catalytic converter to reduce light-off time and lower cold-start
hydrocarbon emissions. The system includes dual heated oxygen sensors (upstream
and downstream) for closed-loop fuel control and catalytic converter efficiency
monitoring.
Direct ignition system (DIS) with individual
coil-on-plug (COP) assemblies mounted directly over each spark plug. The system
utilizes iridium-tipped spark plugs with a service interval of 160,000 km
(100,000 miles). The ignition timing is fully variable and managed by the ECU
based on knock sensor feedback.
Crankcase Ventilation: A positive crankcase ventilation
(PCV) system with a fixed orifice valve routes blow-by gases into the intake
manifold. The system is integrated into the camshaft cover to prevent oil
carryover.
Emissions Control: The engine complies with Tier 2 Bin 5 and LEV2 (Low Emission
Vehicle) standards in North American markets. Evaporative emissions are
controlled via a sealed fuel system with a leak detection pump (LDP) or natural
vacuum leak detection (NVLD) system.
