The Chevrolet L84 is a 5.3-liter V8 engine belonging to
General Motors’ Gen V Small Block family, marketed under the EcoTec3 moniker.
Introduced for the 2019 model year, it serves as the primary gasoline V8
powerplant for GM’s full-size truck and SUV platform. Its architecture is
defined by a shift from the previous generation’s cast iron block to an aluminum
construction, significantly reducing mass.
The L84’s most advanced feature is its Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) system, an
evolution of Active Fuel Management (AFM). DFM utilizes a sophisticated control
module that evaluates driver input, engine load, and vehicle speed every 12.5
milliseconds to select one of 17 cylinder activation patterns, enabling
operation on 1 to 8 cylinders to optimize fuel efficiency without perceptible
driver input.

jets
The cylinder block is manufactured from cast aluminum
(A319-T7) with cast-in-place iron cylinder liners. This construction replaces
the cast iron block used in previous-generation engines (like the L83’s
predecessor) to achieve a significant reduction in overall engine weight.
The block features a deep-skirt design and is cross-bolted at the main bearing
caps for enhanced rigidity and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH)
suppression. It utilizes a 6-bolt attachment per cylinder for the cylinder
heads. The engine is designed with provisions for the DFM hardware, including
oil control solenoids integrated into the block valley.
The cylinder heads are constructed from cast aluminum
(A356-T6) and utilize a 2-valve per cylinder, overhead valve (OHV)
configuration. Intake valves measure 52.8 mm (2.08 in) in diameter, while
exhaust valves are 41.9 mm (1.65 in). The valvetrain employs roller finger
followers, a design that reduces friction compared to traditional flat tappet
systems.
Continuous Variable Valve Timing (VVT) is incorporated on both the intake and
exhaust camshafts, allowing the engine to optimize valve overlap for improved
low-end torque, high-rpm power, and fuel economy. The system is driven by a
single timing chain located at the front of the engine.
The L84 utilizes a high-pressure direct injection (DI)
system, a hallmark of the Gen V engine family. The system operates with a fuel
rail pressure up to 2,175 psi (150 bar). Fuel is delivered directly into the
combustion chamber via solenoid-actuated injectors mounted in the cylinder
heads.
This system allows for more precise fuel metering and improved combustion
cooling compared to port injection. The DFM system relies on this precise fuel
control to seamlessly transition between cylinder activation patterns,
deactivating valves via hydraulic lifters and cutting fuel to the specified
cylinders.
The lubrication system is managed by a
variable-displacement vane-type oil pump. This pump adjusts its output based on
engine speed, load, and temperature to reduce parasitic loss, delivering only
the necessary oil pressure. Piston cooling jets are integrated into the system,
spraying oil on the underside of the pistons to manage combustion temperatures.
The engine is factory-filled with 0W-20 synthetic oil, a low-viscosity lubricant
required to support the precise hydraulic operation of the DFM lifters and VVT
components. A full-flow oil filter with a bypass valve is standard. Total system
capacity is approximately 7.6 L (8.0 qt).
The cooling system features an electric water pump,
eliminating the parasitic drag of a belt-driven mechanical pump. This system is
integrated with an active thermal management module that allows for targeted,
demand-based coolant flow.
The module can direct coolant to the cylinder heads for localized cooling while
restricting flow to the block to accelerate engine warm-up, reducing friction
and emissions during cold starts. The system utilizes a 50/50 mix of Dex-Cool
extended-life coolant and deionized water.
Ignition System: Coil-near-plug ignition with
individual coils for each cylinder. Spark plugs are iridium-tipped, with a
service interval of 161,000 km (100,000 mi).
Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM): The DFM controller uses input from a dedicated
accelerometer and crankshaft position sensor to determine cylinder firing
patterns with 0.4-degree resolution. The system selects patterns ranging from 1
to 8 cylinders to maintain torque output seamlessly.
Start/Stop System: The engine is equipped with an auto start-stop system on most
vehicle applications. This system uses a dual-battery configuration and a
heavy-duty starter to shut down the engine during idle and restart it upon brake
pedal release.
Exhaust System: Stainless steel, dual-outlet manifolds with integrated catalytic
converters positioned close to the engine to facilitate rapid light-off for
emissions compliance.
