The Audi CJEB is a 1.8-liter, inline-4-cylinder
turbocharged petrol engine belonging to the third generation of the EA888
family. Introduced around 2011, this power unit was engineered to address the
shortcomings of its predecessor, the Gen 2 CDHB. Its most significant
advancement is the implementation of a dual-injection system, combining direct
fuel injection (FSI) with multi-point port injection (MPI).
This configuration was designed to eliminate the carbon buildup on intake valves
that plagued earlier direct-injection-only engines. The CJEB also features an
integrated exhaust manifold, a refined valvetrain with the Audi Valvelift System
(AVS), and a redesigned thermal management system, resulting in improved
efficiency, reduced emissions, and a substantial increase in low-end torque
output.
Engine Code: CJEB.
Configuration: Inline 4-cylinder, transversely or longitudinally mounted.
Displacement: 1798 cc (1.8 L).
Bore x Stroke: 82.5 mm x 84.1 mm (3.25 in x 3.31 in).
Compression Ratio: 9.6:1.
Valvetrain: Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC), 16 valves, with continuous camshaft
adjustment on both intake and exhaust sides and Audi Valvelift System (AVS) on
the exhaust side.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Max Power Output: 125 kW (170 PS / 168 hp) at 3,800-6,200 rpm.
Max Torque: 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) at 1,400-3,700 rpm.
Emission Standard: Euro 6.
Fuel Requirement: Premium unleaded, 95 RON.
The cylinder block is manufactured from grey cast iron
with an open-deck design. This construction provides high structural rigidity
necessary to withstand the increased thermal and mechanical loads from
turbocharging. The cylinders feature a honed surface finish that is highly
wear-resistant.
The block incorporates a lightweight aluminum alloy oil pan, which can be either
a stamped steel or a plastic composite unit depending on the specific vehicle
platform. The main bearing caps are a fractured design, ensuring precise
alignment and high strength under load.
The cylinder head is constructed from cast aluminum
alloy and features a cross-flow design. A defining characteristic is the
integrated exhaust manifold, where the manifold is cast directly into the head.
This allows for rapid engine warm-up by circulating coolant around the exhaust
passages, reducing friction losses and enabling the engine to reach optimal
operating temperature faster.
The valvetrain utilizes low-friction roller finger followers. The Audi Valvelift
System (AVS) is employed on the exhaust camshaft, using sliding sleeves with two
different cam profiles to adjust valve lift in two stages, optimizing exhaust
gas behavior and turbocharger response. The intake valves have a diameter of
34.9 mm (1.374 in), and the exhaust valves have a diameter of 29.1 mm (1.146
in).
The CJEB utilizes a sophisticated dual-injection
system. It combines a direct fuel injection (FSI) system operating at pressures
up to 200 bar (2900 psi) with a multi-point port injection (MPI) system
operating at a standard 4 bar (58 psi). The engine management system seamlessly
transitions between these modes based on load and operating conditions.
At low loads and during idle, the engine primarily uses port injection to ensure
a homogenous air-fuel mixture. Under high load, direct injection is employed for
its cooling effect within the combustion chamber, reducing the tendency for
knock. The dual system maintains valve cleanliness by washing the intake valves
with fuel, a process absent in pure direct-injection engines.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized,
closed-loop circuit utilizing a variable-displacement vane-type oil pump. This
pump adjusts its output volume to match engine demand, reducing parasitic power
loss.
The oil cooler is integrated into the oil filter housing, which is a
cartridge-style unit. The system is designed for high thermal efficiency and
features a sophisticated crankcase ventilation system with multiple integrated
oil separators to minimize oil carryover into the intake tract.
Engine Oil Capacity: 5.2 L (5.5 qt).
Oil Specification: VW 502 00 / 504 00 (viscosities such as 5W-30 or 5W-40).
The cooling system features a dual-circuit design with
a map-controlled thermostat and a high-efficiency electric coolant pump. The
primary circuit cools the cylinder head and engine block, while a secondary
circuit provides rapid heating for the cabin and manages the cooling of the
turbocharger.
The integration of the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head is a critical
element of the system, allowing coolant to absorb exhaust heat for faster
warm-up.
Cooling System Capacity: 9.0 L (2.38 gal).
Coolant Specification: G13 (based on glycerin).
Ignition System: The system utilizes direct-acting
pencil-style ignition coils with integrated output stages. Spark plugs are
long-life platinum or iridium types designed for high thermal stress.
Spark Plugs: NGK PLFER7A8EG.
Spark Plug Gap: 0.7-0.8 mm (0.028-0.031 in).
Induction: The engine is equipped with a single,
twin-scroll turbocharger. The integrated exhaust manifold improves pulse
separation to the turbine, enhancing throttle response and reducing turbo lag. A
water-cooled charge air cooler is integrated into the intake manifold to reduce
intake air temperature.
Camshaft Drive: A maintenance-free, low-friction timing chain drives the
camshafts. The chain tensioner is hydraulically operated using engine oil
pressure.
The total length is 650 mm (25.6 in), width is 660 mm
(26.0 in), and height is 670 mm (26.4 in). The dry weight of the complete
engine, including the turbocharger and all ancillary components, is 140 kg (309
lbs). This weight management contributes to balanced vehicle dynamics.
Engine Oil Capacity: 5.2 L (5.5 qt).
Engine Oil Change Interval: 15,000 km (9,300 mi) or 12 months.
Coolant Capacity: 9.0 L (2.38 gal).
Spark Plug Change Interval: 60,000 km (37,000 mi).
Cylinder Head Bolts: 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) + 90° + 90°
Main Bearing Bolts: 65 Nm (48 lb-ft) + 90°
Connecting Rod Bolts: 45 Nm (33 lb-ft) + 90°
Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolts: 23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
Oil Drain Plug (steel pan): 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
Oil Drain Plug (plastic pan): 4 Nm (3 lb-ft) additional 90° turn
Water Pump Bolts: 9 Nm (7 lb-ft)
Spark Plugs: 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
The Audi CJEB engine was primarily utilized in the
facelifted versions of the Audi A4 (B8.5) and Audi A5 (8T) models. Its
production span ran from approximately 2011 through 2016.
Audi A4 (B8.5): 2012-2016 (Model Year 2013-2016)
Audi A5 (8T): 2012-2016 (Model Year 2013-2016)
Audi Q5 (8R): Select markets in the 2013-2017 period
The engine was phased out in favor of the next evolution of the EA888 series,
which introduced further refinements in emissions control and power output.
