General Technical Data
The Audi CDHA is a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged
petrol engine from the EA888 Gen 2 family. It was primarily designed for the
European market as an entry-level power unit for longitudinal engine layouts,
effectively replacing the older 1.8T (EA113) engines. This powerplant is
distinguished by its combination of direct fuel injection and turbocharging,
delivering a broad torque curve conducive to everyday drivability. While its
power output is modest compared to higher-tier variants within the EA888 family,
the CDHA engine emphasizes efficiency, reduced friction, and compliance with
Euro 5 emission standards. It is recognized for its compact construction and the
use of a maintenance-free timing chain system.

Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is manufactured from gray cast iron, a departure from the aluminum construction seen in some other EA888 variants. This material choice provides a rigid foundation for the high cylinder pressures generated by direct injection and turbocharging. The open-deck design allows for efficient coolant flow around the cylinders.
The block incorporates a balancer shaft module mounted within the lower crankcase, which is a structural component. The cylinders are finished with a plateau-honed surface to promote optimal piston ring sealing and reduce oil consumption. The engine features a ladder-frame style lower crankcase that enhances overall structural rigidity and reduces noise, vibration, and harshness.
Cylinder Head and Valves
The cylinder head is constructed from aluminum alloy and employs a cross-flow design. It houses dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) that actuate 16 valves via low-friction roller finger followers. The valves are arranged in a V-angle configuration. The intake valves are actuated by a camshaft equipped with a variable valve timing system on the intake side.
The exhaust camshaft is not equipped with variable timing on this specific engine variant. The valve seat rings and valve guides are manufactured from wear-resistant materials to withstand the thermal loads of the turbocharged, direct-injection combustion process. The cylinder head is sealed to the block using a multi-layer steel (MLS) head gasket.
Fuel System
The fuel system is a high-pressure direct injection system, branded as FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection). A high-pressure fuel pump, mounted on the cylinder head and driven by a three-lobe cam on the exhaust camshaft, generates fuel pressure up to 150 bar (2176 psi). This pump delivers fuel to the stainless steel fuel rail, which distributes it to six-hole solenoid injectors.
These injectors are positioned centrally within the cylinder head, spraying fuel directly into the combustion chamber. The system is designed to operate with a returnless fuel delivery architecture, where a low-pressure fuel pump in the fuel tank supplies the high-pressure pump. This configuration allows for precise metering of fuel, contributing to the engine’s efficiency and power output.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full-flow, pressurized system utilizing a variable-displacement vane-type oil pump. This pump adjusts its output based on engine speed, load, and oil temperature to reduce parasitic losses and optimize oil pressure. The oil circuit includes a thermostatically controlled oil cooler integrated with the oil filter housing.
The engine oil capacity is 4.6 liters (4.9 qt). The specified oil standard is VW 502 00 for fixed service intervals or VW 504 00 for extended flexible service intervals, with approved synthetic grades such as 5W-30 or 5W-40. Oil jets are integrated into the cylinder block to provide targeted cooling for the undersides of the pistons, a critical function for thermal management in a turbocharged engine.
Cooling System
The cooling system operates with a pressurized, sealed circuit. The total cooling system capacity is 8.0 liters (8.5 qt). The system uses a cross-flow radiator and is filled with G12++ or G13 coolant, identifiable by its pink color. A map-controlled thermostat regulates the engine coolant temperature, enabling rapid warm-up and precise thermal management. An electric coolant pump continues operation after engine shutdown to prevent localized hot spots in the turbocharger unit.
Other Systems
The engine management system is a Bosch Motronic MED 17.5, which integrates control of the fuel injection, ignition timing, boost pressure regulation via a wastegate actuator, and the intake camshaft phaser. The turbocharger is a BorgWarner K03 unit, a single-scroll design with an integrated recirculation valve to reduce pressure fluctuations in the intake tract.
Dimensions and Weight
The engine’s overall dimensions are compact to facilitate its longitudinal mounting in the vehicle chassis. The engine length, measured from the front of the accessory drive belt to the rear of the flywheel flange, is 540 mm (21.3 in). The width across the cylinder head and exhaust manifold is roughly 600 mm (23.6 in). The total height from the bottom of the oil pan to the highest point on the intake manifold is about 680 mm (26.8 in). The complete engine assembly, including the alternator, turbocharger, and intake system, but without the transmission, has a dry weight of 135 kg (298 lb).
Maintenance Data
Regular maintenance intervals are defined by the Audi
service schedule. For the CDHA engine, the oil change interval with VW 502 00
oil is set at 15,000 km (9,300 mi) or annually. When using VW 504 00 oil under
the flexible service regime, intervals can extend to a maximum of 30,000 km
(18,600 mi) or two years, determined by vehicle usage patterns.
The engine requires premium unleaded fuel with a minimum of 95 RON. The spark
plugs, NGK PFR7S8EG, have a replacement interval of 60,000 km (37,300 mi) and
are gapped to 0.8 mm (0.031 in). The air filter element should be replaced every
60,000 km (37,300 mi), with more frequent checks in dusty conditions.
The timing chain is intended for the life of the engine, though periodic
inspection for elongation is advisable. The poly-V accessory drive belt is
replaced at intervals determined by condition-based inspection, with a
recommended maximum service life of 120,000 km (74,600 mi).
