The Isuzu C221 engine is a 2.2 liter inline
four cylinder diesel powerplant widely used in Isuzu light trucks,
utility vehicles, agricultural machinery, and industrial applications.
It belongs to Isuzu's long running C-series diesel engine family which
includes the C190, C221, C223, and C240. The C221 became popular due to
its excellent reliability, fully mechanical design, strong low speed
torque, and excellent fuel efficiency. Its cast iron block and head
construction, gear driven camshaft, direct mechanical fuel injection
system, and conservative engineering make it well suited for harsh
operating environments.
The C221 family includes several versions: the base automotive C221, the
improved C221-II, the agricultural C221-A, and the industrial C221-I.
These variants differ in calibration, cooling capacity, governor
settings, air filtration, and accessory compatibility. All versions are
known for long service life, minimal electronic dependency, and very low
operating cost.
The C221 family is a four stroke inline four diesel engine with a total
displacement of approximately 2212 cc or 2.21 liters (135 cu.in). Bore
is 87.5 mm or 3.44 inches. Stroke is 92.0 mm or 3.62 inches. This long
stroke configuration emphasizes torque production at low engine speed
while maintaining moderate piston speed for long component life.
Compression ratio varies between 20.5:1 and 21.0:1 depending on version.
Power output for the automotive C221 is typically between 62 and 68
horsepower at about 4000 rpm. Torque output ranges from 135 to 150 Nm or
about 100 to 111 lb-ft at approximately 2200 to 2400 rpm. Idle speed is
around 750 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Crankshaft rotation is
clockwise when viewed from the front.
The crankshaft is forged steel and supported by five main bearings. This
ensures stability and low vibration under continuous operation. Pistons
are cast aluminum with reinforced ring grooves and three piston rings.
Two compression rings and one oil control ring are used. Connecting rods
are forged steel with high fatigue resistance. The block is cast iron
with thick walls and strong main bearing supports. The cylinder head is
cast iron with swirl type precombustion chambers that promote efficient
combustion and good cold start performance. The camshaft is located in
the block. Valve actuation is through pushrods and rocker arms. This
design is simple, durable, and easy to service.
C221-II Version
The C221-II is an improved version with
modifications including:
Revised combustion chamber shape for improved burn
Modified injector spray pattern
Strengthened rocker arms
Improved cooling passage layout
Enhanced front and rear oil seal design
Improved governor stability
Reinforced head gasket sealing area.
C221-A Agricultural Version
Agricultural variants include:
High torque calibration for low speed implement work
Stronger governor damping
Multi stage cyclone air intake system
Heavy duty cooling system with shrouded fan
Dust protected electrical components
Larger flywheel for smoother power delivery
Hydraulic pump drive provisions.
C221-I Industrial Version
Industrial variants include:
Constant speed governor for generator or pump operation
Oversized radiator and coolant capacity
Optional external oil cooler for continuous running
Heavy duty bearings
Remote mounted air cleaner
24 volt electric starting optional
Reinforced mounting points for industrial chassis.
The C221 uses a mechanical direct injection fuel system. A gear driven
inline fuel injection pump meters and times the delivery of diesel fuel.
A mechanical governor ensures stable rpm. Fuel is drawn from the tank by
a mechanical lift pump. It passes through a primary water separator and
a secondary fine filter before reaching the injection pump. Injectors
are mechanical pintle type or multi hole designs depending on year.
The system is rugged and tolerant of fuel variability. Recommended fuel
type is No. 2 diesel. Fuel filter replacement is recommended every
20,000 km or 12,000 miles. Water separator must be drained frequently.
Injector service or testing is recommended every 80,000 to 100,000 km or
about 50,000 to 62,000 miles.
The lubrication system is a full pressure wet sump system. A gear driven
trochoid oil pump draws oil from the sump and passes it through a full
flow spin on filter. Oil then enters the main gallery to feed crankshaft
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, rocker assemblies,
and auxiliary components. Oil capacity is approximately 5.0 liters or
5.3 US quarts depending on the oil pan configuration.
Normal oil pressure at 3000 rpm ranges from 300 to 450 kPa or 43 to 65
psi. Hot idle oil pressure is around 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi.
Recommended oil grade is SAE 15W-40. Oil change interval for automotive
versions is 5000 to 8000 km or 3000 to 5000 miles. Industrial and
agricultural units require oil change every 150 to 250 operating hours.
Cooling is liquid based using a belt driven centrifugal water pump.
Coolant flows through cast iron block jackets, cylinder head passages,
radiator core, and heater core if equipped. Thermostat begins to open at
approximately 82 degrees Celsius or 180 degrees Fahrenheit, and is fully
open around 95 degrees Celsius or 203 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooling system
capacity is about 6.5 to 7.0 liters or 6.9 to 7.4 US quarts.
The radiator may be copper brass or aluminum. Industrial versions use
oversized radiators. Agricultural units may use protected radiator
screens. Marine variants of similar C series engines use heat exchanger
cooling, though the C221-M is rare. Coolant replacement interval is
every two years or 40,000 km.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
All C221 versions are naturally aspirated. The intake system uses a dry
type air filter on automotive versions. Agricultural and industrial
versions use cyclone precleaners or multi stage filtration to handle
dust and debris. The intake manifold is cast iron or aluminum depending
on model year. Air-flow is tuned for low rpm torque.
Exhaust manifolds are cast iron. Early C221 engines have minimal
emissions control equipment. Later C221-II versions may have simple EGR
systems depending on emissions regulations. Exhaust routing is
straightforward and designed to minimize backpressure.
Electrical and Starting Systems
The C221 uses a 12 volt electrical system. Alternator output ranges from
35 to 45 amperes. The starter motor is a 12 volt reduction gear unit
designed to crank high compression diesel engines. Agricultural and
industrial versions may use optional 24 volt systems for improved cold
weather starting. Glow plugs are installed to aid cold starting.
Electrical grounds must be kept clean for proper performance.
Valve Timing and Drive Mechanism
The camshaft and fuel injection pump are gear driven from the
crankshaft. This eliminates belts or chains and ensures long lasting
precise timing. Valve actuation uses pushrods and rocker arms. Valve
clearances require periodic adjustment.
Standard cold clearances:
Intake: 0.25 mm or 0.010 inches
Exhaust: 0.30 mm or 0.012 inches
Valve clearance adjustment is recommended every 20,000 km or about
12,000 miles.
Engine dimensions:
Length: approximately 690 mm or 27.2 inches
Width: approximately 560 mm or 22.0 inches
Height: approximately 700 mm or 27.6 inches
Dry weight: 175 to 200 kg or about 386 to 441 lbs, depending on
accessories and variant.
Standard maintenance items:
Oil and filter: every 5000 to 8000 km
Fuel filter: every 20,000 km
Air filter: inspect 10,000 km, replace 20,000 to 30,000 km
Valve adjustment: every 20,000 km
Coolant replacement: every two years
Injector service: every 80,000 to 100,000 km.
Compression pressure:
