The Isuzu 4JG2T is the turbocharged version of
the well-known 4JG2 diesel engine, engineered for SUVs, light trucks,
and commercial vehicles requiring improved performance, strong mid-range
torque, and long-term durability. As an advanced development of the
4JG1/4JB1 platform, the 4JG2-T incorporates a wastegated turbocharger,
improved fuelling characteristics, strengthened pistons, enhanced
cooling, and a refined combustion system. The engine was widely used in
the Isuzu Trooper/Bighorn, Isuzu MU/Wizard, Rodeo, and other light-duty
commercial vehicles across global markets.
Known for its smoothness, improved refinement, and higher torque
compared to earlier J-series engines, the 4JG2-T balances power output
with excellent fuel economy and exceptional reliability. While the
engine is more advanced than the classic 4JB1/4JB1-T, it retains Isuzu’s
signature cast-iron durability and fully mechanical field-serviceable
architecture. The 4JG2-T remains extremely popular for rebuilds, swaps,
and off-road use due to its balanced performance and robust mechanical
design.
The Isuzu 4JG2T is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline four-cylinder
turbocharged diesel engine with a displacement of 3,059 cmі (186.6 inі).
Bore is 95.4 mm (3.76 in) and stroke is 107 mm (4.21 in), producing a
long-stroke configuration ideal for high low-RPM torque.
Compression ratio for the turbocharged model typically ranges from
18.0:1 (4JG2-TC) to 18.5:1 (4JG2-T) depending on variant. Firing order:
1–3–4–2. Idle speed: 750 ± 50 rpm. Maximum governed speed: 3,800–4,000
rpm.
Power output:
– Mechanical 4JG2-T: 110-120 hp (82-89 kW) at 3,600–3,800 rpm
– Electronic 4JG2-TC: 120-130 hp (89-97 kW) at 3,600 rpm.
Torque output:
– Mechanical 4JG2T: 240–260 Nm (177–192 lb-ft) @ 2,000 rpm
– Electronic 4JG2TC: 260–280 Nm (192–207 lb-ft) @ 2,000 rpm.
Internal construction:
– cast-iron cylinder block with heavy reinforcement
– forged-steel crankshaft with five oversized bearings
– heavy-duty connecting rods
– aluminum pistons with combustion bowls and oil-cooling galleries
– dry-type cylinder liners
– gear-driven camshaft (pushrod OHV valvetrain)
– two compression rings + one oil control ring.
The fuel system exists in two major configurations:
Mechanical (4JG2T):
– mechanical lift pump
– primary sediment/water separator
– secondary paper-element fuel filter
– fully mechanical rotary or inline injection pump
– multi-hole DI injectors
– mechanical governor
– fuel return circuit.
Electronic Direct Injection (4JG2TC):
– electronically controlled rotary injection pump
– throttle position sensor, boost sensor, and ECU control
– improved injection timing curve
– better emissions performance.
Injection pressure:
– mechanical versions: 180–220 bar
– electronic: 200–260 bar.
Fuel system maintenance:
– fuel filter: 10,000–15,000 km (6,200–9,300 mi)
– injector service: 40,000–60,000 km (25,000–37,000 mi)
– pump timing check: 80,000 km (50,000 mi)
– drain water separator regularly.
A full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system with a gear-type oil pump
ensures consistent flow even at low RPM under load.
Oil specifications:
– oil capacity: 6.5–7.5 L (6.9–7.9 qt)
– running pressure: 300–380 kPa (44–55 psi)
– idle pressure: 80–120 kPa (12–17 psi)
– oil type: SAE 15W-40 or 20W-50 diesel (API CF or higher).
Oil change intervals:
– 5,000–7,500 km (3,000–4,600 mi)
– 150–250 operating hours (industrial use).
Turbocharger bearings require clean, high-quality oil.
Cooling is handled by a closed-loop forced-circulation system.
Cooling specs:
– capacity: 8–10 L (8.4–10.6 qt)
– thermostat opens at: 82°C (180°F)
– fully open: 95°C (203°F)
– pressure rating: 70–90 kPa (10–13 psi).
Cooling system maintenance:
– coolant replacement every 30,000 km or 2 years
– radiator fin cleaning recommended for dusty areas.
The 4JG2-T uses a fixed-geometry wastegated turbocharger tuned for
durability and mid-range torque rather than peak boost. Standard boost
pressure: 0.55–0.85 bar (8–12 psi).
Benefits include:
– improved low-rpm torque
– better drivability under load
– increased power without major fuel consumption increase
– improved altitude performance.
Some variants include small factory intercoolers, though many do not.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake:

– oil-bath or cyclone filters for dusty regions
– reinforced turbo intake plumbing.
Exhaust:
– cast-iron turbo-mount manifold.
– wastegated turbocharger
– optional heavy-duty mufflers or spark arrestors
Cold-start aids:
– glow plugs
– intake air heater on select models.
| Electrical and Starting Systems |
Electrical configuration:
