The Cummins LT10 is a mid-range, heavy-duty,
turbocharged inline six-cylinder diesel engine developed for trucks,
buses, construction machinery, and industrial power units. As part of
Cummins’ L-Series lineage preceding the modern L10/M11/ISM engines, the
LT10 earned a reputation for robust durability, strong mid-range torque,
mechanical simplicity, and long overhaul life. Its cast-iron block,
mechanical fuel system, gear-driven components, and straightforward
valvetrain architecture made it especially reliable in harsh operating
environments.
The LT10 was widely used in vocational trucks, urban buses, agricultural
equipment, road construction machinery, stationary industrial
installations, and generator-drive applications. This engine provided an
excellent balance of serviceability, fuel efficiency for its class, and
rugged long-duration performance. Although superseded by more modern
electronic engines, the LT10 remains respected in legacy fleets
worldwide for its mechanical reliability and ease of overhaul.
The Cummins LT10 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged inline
six-cylinder diesel engine. Displacement is approximately 10 liters (610
cubic inches). Bore measures 125 mm (4.92 in) and stroke is about 136 mm
(5.36 in), giving the engine a long-stroke design optimized for torque
and fuel-efficient combustion. Compression ratio typically ranges from
16.5:1 to 17.0:1 depending on configuration.
Power ratings varied by application:
– Truck/Bus applications: 230–300 hp (172–224 kW) @ 1,800–2,100 rpm
– Industrial and construction: 200–260 hp (149–194 kW)
– Generator-drive ratings: 150–220 kW @ 1,500–1,800 rpm
Peak torque: 1,050–1,250 Nm (774–922 lb-ft) @ 1,200–1,500 rpm
Idle speed: 600–700 rpm
Governed speed: 1,800–2,100 rpm
Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The crankshaft is forged steel supported by seven main bearings. Pistons
are aluminum alloy with reinforced combustion bowls and oil cooling
galleries. Connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable bearings.
The camshaft is gear-driven for lifetime timing stability and minimal
maintenance.
The LT10 cylinder block is heavy-duty cast
iron with:
– Parent-bore cylinders
– Deep skirt and strengthened ribbing
– Wide main-bearing saddles
– Full water-jacket cooling around the cylinders
The block’s rigidity allows extended high-load operation and supports
multiple overhauls through standard reboring.
The cast-iron cylinder head features:
– Two valves per cylinder (one intake, one exhaust)
– Direct-injection combustion chambers
– Hardened valve seats and guides
– Mechanical rocker-arm valvetrain
Cold valve-lash clearances:
– Intake: 0.25 mm (0.010 in)
– Exhaust: 0.50 mm (0.020 in)
The head was engineered for durability under prolonged turbocharged
operation with high exhaust temperatures.
The LT10 uses a mechanical direct-injection fuel system.
Depending on variant, the system may
include:
– Bosch inline mechanical fuel-injection pump
– Mechanical lift pump
– Multi-hole direct-injection mechanical injectors
– Primary water separator

Fuel-system maintenance:
– Replace filters every 250–300 hours
– Drain water separator daily
– Injector inspection every 1,000–1,500 hours
– Pump timing verification at major service intervals.
The full-pressure lubrication system
includes:
– Gear-driven oil pump
– Full-flow and bypass filtration
– Oil jets for piston cooling
Oil capacity: 24–30 liters (25–32 qt)
Operating oil pressure: 275–380 kPa (40–55 psi)
Idle pressure: 70–100 kPa (10–15 psi)
Recommended oil:
– SAE 15W-40
– API CI-4, CJ-4, or CK-4
Oil-change interval: 250 hours in industrial duty; shorter in severe
